Description
J. M. BEEBE.
Fence Posts.
No. 136,406. Patented March 4, 1873.
2 I w. I "WI/wars,
AM. PHUTO-LITHUERAPH/L ca Mx (ossonufii PROCESS) TA'IES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. BEEBE, OF OASSADAGA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHARLES V, BEEBE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,406, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M BEEBE, of Uassadaga, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a certain new Improvement in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to that class of fence-posts in which the lower part which enters the ground is made of iron and the upper portion of wood. The invention consists of a metallic base part inserted in a slot in the wooden portion of the post, and provided with two vertical flanges, the upperportions of which overlap the lower end of the post on opposite sides, and secure the base part in the slot of the wooden post without requiring any additional fastening device, said flanges serving at the same time to give the required stili'ness to the base part. 1
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved fence-post arranged in a board-fence. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fence-post and Fig. 3, a crosssection on an enlarged scale in line :0 m, Fig. 1.
Like letters designate like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the wooden portion of the post, and a the slot formed in the lower end thereof. B is the web or main portion of the metallic base part, which is preferably constructed of sheet-iron, and b b the vertical flanges thereof, arranged at right angles to the web B, and turned in opposite directions, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The web B of the base-piece is inserted in the slot to of the post A, when the upper portions of the flanges b b overlap and fit snugly against the front and back of metal, it is readily driven into the ground, and.
requires only a narrow slot in the post A for its connect-ion therewith, which does not materially reduce the strength of the post. The upper corners b of the flanges b may be in dented in the post A, so as to hold itmo're firmly against vertical displacement.
My improved fence-post is of the simples construction, and very cheaply produced, while it possesses the required strength and stability.
I claim as my invention- I A fence-post composed of the wooden portion A, provided with the slot at and the metallic base-piece B inserted therein, and provided with the fastening-flanges b b, resting against the front and back of the wood en post,
Witnesses W. W. FISHER, A. BAILEY.
