To all whom it may concern:

Be 1t known that I, RALPH R. SANDFORD,

' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New London, in the county of Huron and Statel of Chio, have invented a new'and improved Seam for Rain-Coats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide-a new and improved seam for rain coats and other similar waterproof garmentsl and arranged to prevent the seam from accidentally opening and to render the seam watertight. A

ln order to accomplish the desired result, use is madeof a strip of fabric material overlying the overlapping seam sides of the garment, an adhesive substance between the contacting surfaces'of the saidhseain sides and the said strip, and stitches connecting the sides of the'said strip with the seam sides, the said vadhesive substance tilling the stitch holes.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,

in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views. Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a rain coat providedv with the improved seams; and

provided with a binding 18, and the contacting faces of the strip 15 and the corresponding seam sides 11 and 12 are connected with each other by an adhesive substance 20, such as cement. After the strip 15 is fastened in place by the adhesive substance 20 and While the latter is still in plastic condition the side edges of the strip 15 are fastened to the seam sides by stitches 25, 26, of which the stitches 25 pass through the doubled-up edge A16, and the stitches 26 nass through the edge 17 and its binding 18, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2L Now owing to the fact that the adhesive substance 2O is stillin plastic condition it is evident that the stitch holes formed by the needle are filled with some of the adhesive substance 2O thus rendering the stitch holes waterproof.

ln rain coats as heretofore made theseam strips were simply fastened to the seam sides by' an adhesive substanceI but such strips were liable to become loose with the wear and tear of the garment and the seams become correspondingly open. `With the improvement above described lthe seam strip the adhesive substance but also by the rows yof stitches 25 and 26, and in addition the stitch holes formed during the sewingoperation are illed with the adhesive substance, thus rendering the stitch holes as well as the seam completely waterproof. A seam made in the manner described. is exceedingly strong and durable and is not liable to open up even if the garment is subjected to considerable strain.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent "j 1.
