Description
TATES GEORGE BARRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGARMOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,323, dated February 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, GEORGE BARRY, ot' Chicago, in the 'county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Cigar-Mold, ot' which the following is a specification z The present invention relates to animproved mold, which is designed to give a suitable form to the fillers of cigars before the wrappers are put thereon; and its nature consists in pivoting side clamps to the mold, whereby the fillers are formed in one operation, without seams or any other imperfection7 and in providing means for air to pass through the cigar and cure it, as the Whole is hereinafter fully described and shown.
In the dra-wing, Figure 1 is a perspective representation ofm y improved ci gar-mold when open, preparatory to receiving a cigar-iiller, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same With the clamps closed, as when a filler is being formed; Fig. 3, a transverse section of Fig. 2 on line A represents the lower and B the upper clamp, which are made of iron or other suitable material, and jointed together at I, so as freely to open and shut. D H represent recesses formed in the insides of the parts A B, of such depth as will, when the side clamps C C are closed, form the proper-shaped mold for the liller of a cigar. These clamps C C are pivoted to the lower part B at d d, and their inner edges L are concaved out, so as to form a part of the mold, and their jointed or pivoted ends are provided With grooves b between them, so that air may pass through the cigar or iiller and cure it, when such a process is required. The parts A B are provided With a spring joint, or have a spring at the joint, as shown at j', so that the part A will be thrown open so soon as the clamp which holds it to the part B is removed. As will be seen at Figs. l and 3, the parts A B are beveled off at F F.
This construction is such that When the side clamps C C are being closed they Will force all ofthe tobacco into the mold Without leaving a seam or other imperfection on the ller. In this respect the mold differs from any other in use, and is far superior, inasmuch as the filler is formed in one single operation. outer sides of the parts A Bare formed with recesses J in them, so as to save metal, and provide them with holders K on the larger end ofthe mold, for the convenience of drawing the latter from the press or clamp which holds the said parts A B together.
The operation is very simple, requiring only that the iiller, of proper size, with the binder on, be placed in that part of the mold shown at H, when both ofthe side clamps C are open, as one is shown at Fig. l. The part A is then brought down onto the ller, and the clamps C C brought together, as shown at Fig. 3, and held there by any suitable clamp until the lillers are to be removed. A rack-press, however, invented by me, and now in use, is found to be the most convenient means for clamping, holding, and handling the molds.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The combination ofthe clamps A B with side clamps C C, constructed and arranged to operate as and for Ithe purpose set forth.
2. rlhe combination of the parts A B with side clamps C C, the latter being provided with a groove, b, to admit air into the mold, as set forth.
3. The combination ofthe clamps A B and C C, each provided With a recess, J, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE BARRY.
