UNITE RICHARD It. CALVER'I AND WILLIAM MICHAEL, OF llIANSFIELD, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT EN PAD CRIMPS AND LASTS FOR HARNESS.
` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,931, dated July 30, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Pad Crimp and Last for Harness, invented by RIGHARDRCALVERT and WILLIAM Mionnnr.,
' of Hanseld, in the county of Parke and State of Indiana.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of our improved crimp. Fig. 2 is a top view of the last, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new device for stretching the leather for all kinds of harness pads, and also to a new sectional last for keep ing the pads distended while being stitched in the stitchinghorse. The invention consists,
also, in making the last for holding the pad f distended of a series of blocks, which are made in sections, obliqnely divided, to prevent spontaneous displacement, but permit their ready removal from the stitched pad.
Ain the drawing represents the bed or base of the crimping apparatus. B is the top or cover thereof, hinged to the base A at one end, and provided with a projecting block, C, which, when the cover is folded down, enters a cavity or opening in the base. The leather to .be
crimped is placed on the base when the cover is swung up, and the cover is then swung down, forcing the block C against the leather, and shaping the latter in the desired manner. By this means the leather is rapidly and nicely crimped, and will be quite smooth and of good appearance throughout, and much material is economized by the proper method of stretching. A lever, D, pivoted to the end of the base A is made to bear on the cover, and held down by a link, E, to hold the cover down during the crimping process. The link is hinged to the cover and embraces the lever, and can be set into one of a series of notches or teeth of the said lever. When the pad has been crimped and is to be stitched in a stitchinghorse of suitable kind, it is held distended by a last, F, which is composed of two or more layers, a. a, of wood en blocks, which altogether fillthe pad. Each of these layers is composed of two pieces, which are obliqnely separated, as indicated by the line b in Fig. 2. By this oblique separation the insertion within the pad ofthe section ofwood, and their removal therefrom, one after another, is provided for, while they will not shift within the pad or drop out of it.A
Having thns described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent-` VThe pad-last F, composed of layers a a of obliquely-separated sections, as set forth.
RICHARD It. CALVERT'. WILLIAM MICHAEL.
