ANTHONY WINCHESTER BROWN, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, or ONE-HALF TO JOHN L. LooKwooD, JR,
OF S AME PLACE.
CIGARETTE-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,337, dated October 9, 1900.
Application filed March 9, 1900. serial No. 8,011. lio modeLJ I T at whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, A THONY WINCHESTER BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Rollers, of which the following isaspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in cigarette-rollers, the object being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and compact in structure, certain in its action, and convenient to use.
Myinvention consists in providing two substantially semicylindrical members hinged together on their two adjacent longitudinal sides, so as to open to receive tobacco and close to retain and pack or compress it, in combination with novel means for holding the cigarette-wrapper in position while the cigarette is being made and for removing the cigarette and wrapper simultaneously and for pushing the tobacco some distance back from one of the ends of the cigarette-wrapper to form a mouthpiece, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
My invention consists in other novel features of construction, hereinafter described.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of my cigarette-roller as it would appear closed after having received a charge of tobacco. Fig. 2 represents the same open.
Fig. 3 represents a section on the line a a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 represents an enlarged view of the elastic collar.
Similar characters of reference designate like parts in all of the figures.
Numeral 1 represents one of the semicylindrical members, which is preferably made about the length of the finished cigarette. 2 represents the other semicylindrical member, made somewhat longer than the top piece 1.
3 is a hinge joining l and 2.
4 is a slot in the bottom piece 2. 5 is an elastic collar, which has the rim 6 and straight cylindrical portion 7.
8 is a piston or plunger arranged to operate within the semicylindrical members and rigidly attached to the elastic collar 5 by" means of the pin 10', passing through the slot l. The face or working end of the piston 8 is located some distance in advance of the bottom pieces, respectively, are made to over-' lap or pass each other when closed for the purpose of packing and compressing the tobacoo and also for the purpose of severing protruding filaments or pieces of tobacco.
In the operation of the device it is first opened, as shown in Fig. 2, when a sufiicient amount of tobacco is placed within or upon the. receptacle thus formed.
pressed down sufliciently to permit the elastic collar 5 to be passed a short distance over it. The wrapper is then wound around the cylindrical members and around the straight cylindrical part 7 of the elastic collar 5, its
end being brought up against the shoulder or rim 6. The elastic collar is then moved to the right, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, carrying with it the wrapper, while the piston 8 simultaneously carries the tobacco, keeping the end of the tobacco filler always a distance from the end of the wrapper equal in the amount to the distance between the advance face of the piston 8 and the rim 6.
I have found in practice that owing to the tendency of the tobacco to pack as it is being shoved out there is a tendency to open the cylindrical members and that where a solid or non-elastic ring is used the parts have a tendency to cramp or bind, thus increasing the difficulty of removing the cigarette if not preventing it altogether. By using the elastic collar I overcome this difficulty in a most satisfactory manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a cigarette-roller, the combination with two semicylindrical members hinged together on two of their longitudinal edges, of a piston adapted to slide within said semicylindrical members and an elastic collar attached to said piston adapted to operate outside of said semicylindrical members.
The top piece is then closed down over the tobacco and- 2. In a cigarette-roller, the combination with two semicylindrical members hinged together on two of their longitudinal edges, of an elastic collar adapted to slide over and hold in position said semicylindrical members when they are closed.
3. In a cigarette-roller, the combination with two semicylindrical members hinged together on two of their longitudinal edges, of a longitudinal slot in one of said semicylindrieal members, of a piston adapted to operate within said semicylind rical members when closed and an elastic collar, adapted to slide over said semicylindrical members when closed, attached to said piston.
4. In a cigarette-roller, the combination with two semicylindrical members hinged together on two of their longitudinal edges, of an elastic collar, having a shoulder 6, adapted to inclose and slide over said semicylindrical members and a piston attached to said elastic collar adapted to operate within said semicylindrical members, having its working face in advance of the shoulder 6.
5. In a cigarette-roller, the combination with two semicylindrical members hinged together on two of theirlongitudinal edges, one
