Description

auch site GEORGE T. BENSON, OE JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
LettersPatent No. 108,961, dated November 8, 1870.
8 IMPROVEMENT IN HAT yAND COAT-RACKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that LGnonGn T. Benson, of Jersey Oity, in the county of Hudson and in the State of New Jersey, have -invented celtain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Racks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing Ina-king a part ot this specification, in whichv Figure lis a front elevation ci' 'my device when extended and ready for use;
Figures 2 and Saro a front and an edge view, respectively, of the same when folded together;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of one of the hooks; and Y Figure 5 is a rear elevation of one of thc sections.
Letters of like naine and kind refer to like parts in cach ot' the gures.
' The object ot' my invention is to produce a cheap and durable hat and coat-rack, that shall be capable of folding together ina compact form, so as to occupy vbut little space when not inuse; and 1t consists in the employment of an open frame composed of pivoted, edgewisc-folding sections, each of which contains one or more l1erizontally-swinging hooks journaled vertically therein, substantiallyias is hereinafter showin y It also consists in the arrangement upon theA said sections of the lugs or detents and their corresponding sockets, substantially as is hereinafter shown and described. y
In the annexed drawing- A representsa frame, of cast nietal,'eoinposed of two parallel bars, a, connected together at their ends by 1neansof two semieircular bars, a', the whole forming oneof thc-sections of the main frame.
.livoted 'to or within the parallel bars e is a hook, B, consisting cfa vertical bar, b, having its ends pointed so as to tit into corresponding sockets within the frame, and furnishing a support fortwo outward-projecting branches', b', thc ends of which terminate in small knobs or buttons, as shown.
- The hook and vframe' are each formed of cast metal,
and are connected together` by placing the former within a inold and casting the latter around it, by which means greater strength and durability are secured, and a saving intime and labor effected over other methods of accomplishing this result.
As thus constructed the sections are pivoted together so as toyswing cdgewise, as shown in g. 1,
and the outer sections provided with suitable metal eyes C, by means of which the rack may be-suspended upon or from screws or nails ,projecting from a verti-' Iu order that the relative vertical position of the sections may be insured when the frame is extended or closed, a half-round stud, z, is secured to and projects rearward Vfrom the -bar a a short distance, to one side of the pivot, at one end of each section, and engages with suitable' corresponding recesses 2 provided within the'outer face of the contiguous bar of the adjoining section, the relative arrangement of said stud and recesses being such as to arrest the Inovernent-of the sections whenever they are shut together or extended, so as to bring the bars a 0f each in a line with each other.
rlhc device is now complete, and possesses the advantage of strength and durability, in combination with a comparatively small cost.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of `my invention,
What I claim as new, is Y 1. rlhc combination of an open frame and a horizontally-swinging hook journaled vertically between y its sides, when said frame is pivoted to and folds edgewisc upon a similar frame, substantially as andl for the purpose shown.
2. In combinationwith the above-named elements, the studs z and recesses z', substantially as shown, and for the purpose specied. i
In testimony that -I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this v10th day of October, 1870.
