ANTHONY FIALA, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SLEEPING-BAG.
" all who 1n it may concern ie it known that I, ANTHONY FIALA, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeping-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sleeping bags and particularly to that class used by explorers and has for an object to provide a bag which may receive a person and which has portions thereof capable of being wrapped around the head and shoulders of a person.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sleeping bag having the portions thereof about the opening capable of being compactly folded about the head and shoulders of a person therein.
A further object is to provide a sleeping bag having flaps which form an opening and extensions from a flap which is foldable under the principal flaps to absolutely envelop the body of a person therein.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claim and drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bag showing the flaps swung wide open, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the flaps in partly closed position, and, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bag completely closed as in usage.
in sleeping bags where it is desired to provide a comparatively large opening for access thereto, it is difiicult to provide such an enlarged opening and at the same time permit the bag to be comfort-ably closed after the person gets into it.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, there is shown the side pieces and 11 which may be one continuous piece formed in a U shape and having the ends thereof connected by the end 12, or the sides 10 and 11 may be made of separate pieces and stitched together as shown. The sides 10 and 11 and the end 12 are stitched to the edge of a bottom piece 1 1 and a top piece 15 which top piece extends to Within Specification of Letters Patent.

a short distance of the rounded end of the bag. From where the top piece 15 terminates, flaps l6 and 17 are secured to the side pieces 10 and 11 which flaps are cut to conform with the rounded end of the bag and which flaps overlap each other in their completely folded position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Secured to the end of the top 15 or if so desired made integral therewith is a flap 18 which may be stitched to the end as shown at 19 and which flap may be made of a desired width and of a length greater than the width of the bag so as to form additional flaps 20 which when in use are folded about the shoulders of the party in the bag so as to completely envelop the shoulders and prevent any cold air from passing between the flaps 16, 17 and 18.
Then a person desires to use the bag, he enters through the opening formed by the flaps 16, 17 and 18 then he draws the flap 18 up to his neck tucking the flaps 20 under his shoulders then the flaps 16 and 17 are placed so as to allow their edges to surround the face of the wearer which is the only part of the body not covered by a bag of this kind.
I do not restrict myself to the identical form shown in the drawings submitted herewith as they are for illustrative purposes only and Having thus described my invention I claim:
A sleeping bag comprising an elongated bag having one end rounded, one of the sides thereof having an opening therein adjacent the rounded end, a flap formed by the shortened side formed by the opening extending beyond the edge of the opening, extensions from said flap beyond the edges of said side, said extensions being foldable within the bag and a flap carried by each of the sides surrounding the opening, said flaps partially overlapping one another and the first mentioned flap and its extensions.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTHONY FIALA.
