COMBINATION TOWEL AND BEACH RAG Filed Feb. 21, 1952 INVENTOR. ADELLA S. Auoerzson ATTOQM EYS Patented Jan. 27, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION TOWEL AND BEACH BAG Adella S. Anderson, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application February 21, 1952, Serial No. 272,798
, 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a combination towel and beach bag. More particularly, the invention has reference to the construction of an article which can be formed from a single length of toweling material or the like, said length being so formed as to be provided, at opposite ends thereof, with a towel and beach bag, respectively, said length of toweling being further provided with flexible carrying handles, whereby the article can be readily carried by a user. It is one important object of the present invention to provide a combination article of the character described which can be readily formed from a single, rectangular piece of toweling material.
Another important object is to provide an article as stated which can be manufactured in a minimum of time and at low expense.
Yet another important object is to provide a combination towel and beach bag which will be readily foldable into a form in which it resembles a conventional beach bag, and is readily carried over the arm.
Yet another important object is to provide a combination article as described above, which, when unfolded, will lie flat, so as to permit the entire area thereof, including the beach bag portion, to be used as a large towel.
A further important object is to provide a combination towel and beach bag, wherein the beach bag portion will be provided with a waterproof lining, said lining being so related to the length of material from which the article is formed as to simplify greatly the manufacturing operations whereby the entire article is produced.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claims appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of a combination towel and beach bag formed inaccordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, the scale being enlarged still further, taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the completed article as it appears when folded in a manner that will permit it to be readily carried by a user.
The combination towel and beach bag constituting the present invention includes a single, rectangular length of toweling material, designated generally by the reference numeral I0.
One end portion l2 of said length of material may be conveniently termed a towel portion of rectangular configuration having an outer side folded upon itself, as at M, to form a tube receiving a flexible carrying handle Hi. The carrying handle i6 extends throughout the length of the tube I4, and has its opposite ends projecting beyond the opposite longitudinal edges of the length of toweling material NJ, as may be readily noted by reference to Figure 1.
A line of stitching i8 is extended transversely of the length of toweling Ill, so as to complete the formation of the tube, the opposite ends of the tube being left open for extension of the carrying handle [6 therethrough.
The other end portion 20 of the length of toweling material I0 is folded upon itself so as to form a rectangular receptacle terminating intermediate opposite ends of the length I0, and having two of its sides extending transversely of said length. The remaining two sides of the receptacle are aligned with the opposite longitudinal edges of the length of toweling, thus to form a large, fiat repository for personal articles, such as bathing suits, spare towels, etc.
The receptacle has been designated generally by the reference numeral 2|, and is preferably provided with a waterproof lining. To this end I provide a flat lining piece 22 of rubber, plastic, or other waterproof material, said lining piece being rectangular in blank and being folded upon itself intermediate its opposite ends so as to line the opposite walls of the double-walled receptacle 2|.
So as to secure the lining in place and permanently close the receptacle 2| along one of its transversely extended sides, a line of stitching 24 is provided, said line of stitching being spaced closely from the fold line of the length of toweling l0, whereby the receptacle was initially formed.
This has the effect of forming a second tube 26, so that the completed article has handle-receiving tubes at both ends thereof. A second carrying handle 28, formed similarly to the first handle I6, is extended through the tube 26, and has its opposite ends projecting beyond the opiplosiig longitudinal edges of the length of towel- One of the sides of the receptacle that are aligned longitudinally with the longitudinal edges of the length I0 is also permanently closed by a line of stitching 30, and a permanent closing of the other transversely extending side of 3 the receptacle is also effected by lines of stitching 32. The lines of stitching 24, 3E], 32, of course, all extend through the folded lining piece 22, so as to make the beach bag portion or receptacle 2! waterproof.
The remaining side of the receptacle 2! is formed open, and is secured by lines of stitching 34 to a pair of tapes 36 carrying the slide fastener element 38, said element being adapted as a closure means for the open side of the receptacle.
I prefer to provide an inner pocket in the receptacle 21, said pocket being formed from a small piece of material 40 secured to one wall of the receptacle 2| by transverse lines of stitching 42 and longitudinal lines of stitching M. By reason of this construction, the pocket is partitioned into a plurality of separate article-receiving portions in which relatively small articles, such as compacts, packs of cigarettes, etc, can be placed.
As may be noted from Figure 4, the entire article can be folded so as to have the appearance of a conventionally formed beach bag, the carrying handles It, 28 being knotted, as at 36, to form a loop capable of being slipped over the arm when the combination article is being carried from place to place.
It will be readily appreciated that when the article is laid fiat, as in Figure 1, the entire area thereof, including the beach bag portion or receptacle 2|, is available for use as a towel, since the waterproof lining 22 of the receptacle will prevent dampness from seeping into the inner portion of the receptacle.
It is also to be noted that the article can be used as an item of beach wear. The flexible carrying handles at one end can be tied around the waist, and the other end of the article then placed over the head and the flexible carrying handles at the other end tied around the chin. It is also possible to tie the flexible carrying handles at one end around the left wrist, and the flexible carrying handles at the other end around the right wrist. The main part of the article then extends over the entire back of the person and protects one from the sun, etc.
It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor changes in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claims.
