In a friction hinge mounting for pivotal and tiltable windows comprising interengaging arcuate guide members 7 and 12, a section 7<SP>1</SP> of the arc shaped guides 7 is pivotable about a pin 15, such that when the frame and sash members 3 and 4 are relatively positioned as in Fig. 4 (not shown), the sash may be further swung open about the pin 15. Anticlockwise movement of the sash member is arrested by an end portion 20 of an arcuate guide member 19, whereas clockwise movement is governed by a shoulder 18. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the arc shaped guide 7 is wholly secured to the frame member 3, whilst the coacting arcuate rail 12 is located on a bowl sector 13 which is pivoted about the pin 15 secured to the sash member 4. Pivotal movement in the vicinity of the closed position is similar to that of the previous embodiment with relative rotation of the sash member 4 and rail 12 being prevented by a locking pin 21 sliding within the guide member 7, until it is released at the position corresponding to Fig. 6 (not shown). The sash is further opened about the pin 15. A pin 24 is secured to the base plate 4 and extends through an arc-shaped aperture 25 in the bowl sector 13, to ensure that the plate 13 is arrested in relation to the guide 7 until the base plate 4 has been rotated to the position indicated in Fig. 6 (not shown), before the sash is closed.
