Abstract

투명전극(2a, 2b) 및 배향막(3a, 3b)을 이 순으로 배설한 1쌍의 기판(la, 1b)이 소정의 간극을 두어 대향배치되고, 상기 간극내에 강유전성 액정(5)이 주입되어 있는 액정소자로서, 이 액정을 스위칭하기 위한 임계치전압이 다른 영역이 미세하게 분포되어 있는 극정소자를 펄스전압 및/또는 펄스폭 변조방식, 화소전극분할방식 또는 타임인테그레이션방식에 의해 구동하는 구동방법 및 그 액정소자이다.
액정소자의 아날로그계조성(階調性)을 한층 향상시킬 수 있고, 또한 대면적의 액정표시소자를 저코스트로 실현하고, 그 풀컬러비디오레이트에서의 구동도 가능하게 하는 것이다. 또, 상기 각 구동방식을 조합할 때는 전술의 임계치전압이 다른 미세영역을 가지고 있지 않아도, 계조성을 동일하게 발현할 수 있다.

Claims (16)

1쌍의 기체(基體) 사이에 액정이 배설되고, 이 액정을 스위칭하기 위한 임계치전압이 다른 영역이 미세하게 분포되어 있는 액정소자를 매트릭스구동에 의해 구동하는데 있어서, 어드레싱신호를 주사전극에 인가하는 것과 동기하여, 화소의 계조(階調)에 대응하여 펄스전압 및/또는 펄스폭을 변조한 데이터 신호를 데이터전극에 인가하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항에 기재한 액정소자의 매트릭스구동에 있어서, 1화소를 구성하는 데이터전극을 서로 다른 면적의 복수 부분으로 분할하고, 어드레싱신호를 주사전극에 인가하는 것과 동기하여, 화소의 계조에 대응한 데이터신호의 조합을 상기 분할된 복수의 데이터전극부분에 인가하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항에 기재한 액정소자의 매트릭스구동에 있어서,화소의 계조에 대응하여, 1프레임 또는 1필드내에서 1화소당 복수회의 라인어드레싱을 반복하는 액정소자의 구동방법,
제2항에 기재한 구동방법과, 제3항에 기재한 구동방법과를 조합하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제4항에 기재한 구동방법에 있어서, 1화소를 구성하는 데이터전극의 분할 수를 n으로 하고, 1프레임 또는 1필드내에서의 1화소당의 라인어드레싱 횟수를 m으로 했을 때, 상기 데이터전극의 분할부분의 면적비를 1 : (m+1) : …: (m+1)n-2: (m+1)n-1로 하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항에 기재된 구동방법과, 제3항에 기재한 구동방법과를 조합하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제6항에 기재한 구동방법에 있어서, 1화소의 선형적인 계조수≥(m+1)n-l+l를 부여하는 최대 정수 n 또는 1화소의 비선형적인 계조수≥n+1를 부여하는 최대 정수 n와, 1프레임 또는 1필드내에서의 1화소당의 라인어드레싱 횟수 m와를 조합하여, 1화소의 투과율비를 1 : (m+1) : … : (m+1)n-2: (m+1)n-1로 하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항에 기재된 구동방법과, 제2항에 기재한 구동방법과를 조합하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제8항에 기재한 구동방법에 있어서, 계조한 데이터신호에 의한 1 화소의 계조수 1와, 1화소를 구성하는 데이터전극의 분할수 n와를 조합하여,이 데이터전극의 분할부분의 면적비를 1 : 1 … : 1n-2: 1n-1로 하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항에 기재한 구동방법과, 제2항에 기재한 구동방법과, 제3항에 기재한 구동방법과를 조합하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제10항에 기재한 구동방법에 있어서, 변조한 데이터신호와 1화소를 구성하는 데이터전극의 분할과의 조합으로 얻어지는 1화소의 선형적인 계조수≥(m+1)n-l+l를 부여하는 최대 정수 n 또는 1화소의 비선형적인 계조수≥n+1를 부여하는 최대 정수 n와, 1프레임 또는 1필드내에서의 1화소당의 라인어드레싱 횟수 m와를 조합하여, 1화소의 투과율비를 1 : (m+1) : …: (m+1)n-2: (m+1)n-1로 하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항∼제11항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 패시브매트릭스 액정디스플레이의 화소에 컬러필터를 조합하는 구동방법.
제1항∼제11항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 패시브래트릭스 액정디스플레이에 대하여, 1프레임 또는1필드내에서 각 색의 백라이트를 각각 최소한 1회 전환하여, 각 색에 대응한 계조를 선택하는 구동방법.
제1항∼제13항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 투명전극 및 배향막을 이 순으로 배설한 1쌍의 기판이 소정의 간극을 두어 대향배치되고, 상기 간극내에 강유전성 액정이 주입되어 있는 액정소자로서, 반전 도메인에 의한 투과율이 25%일 때에 2㎛Φ이상의 크기의 도메인 1㎟의 시야중에 300개 이상 존재하고, 또한 그 도메인내에서의 임계치전압폭이 투과유 10∼90%의 범위에서 2볼트 이상이고, 이것에 의해 계조표시를 행할 수 있도록 구성한 액정소자 매트릭스구동하는 구동방법.
제4항∼제13항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 제1항이 기재한 액정소자 이외의 액정소자를 사용하는 액정소자의 구동방법.
제1항∼제15항중 어느 한 항에 기재한 구동방법에 의해 구동되도록 구성한 액정소자.
