제어 단어 보안 방법 및 장치{METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SECURING CONTROL WORDS}
2. 전체 배경
아날로그 통신 시스템은 그것의 디지털 상대자에 의해 빠르게 밀리고 있다. 디지털 텔레비젼은 현재, 2002년 까지는 전 소비자에게 전국적으로 이용 가능하고 2006년 까지는 완전히 자리를 잡을 예정이다. 고화질 텔레비전(HDTV: High-definition television) 방송은 한정적으로 대부분의 주요 도시에서 이미 시작되었다. 유사하게, 인터넷 및 월드 와이드 웹(World Wide Web)의 폭발적 성장은 다운로드 가능한 오디오-비주얼 파일, 이를테면 MP3-포맷으로 된 오디오 파일 뿐만 아니라 다른 콘텐트의 증가에 있어서 상호 관련성이 있는 성장을 가져왔다.

CPTWG는 콘텐트 제공자,컴퓨터 및 소비자 전자 제품 제조사를 나타낸다.

유료(pay)-TV를 위한 전통적인 조건부 액세스 시스템은 비정규 경로(back channel)가 이용될 수 없었던 한쪽 방향만의(one-way) 방송 시스템에서 비롯되었다. 예를 들면, 셋톱 박스와 같은 조건부 액세스 유닛 안에 있는, 스마트 카드와 같은 암호화 프로세서에는 프로그램으로의 액세스를 자동적으로 승인하기 위하여 일반적으로, 정보 및 기능이 주입된다.
예를 들면, 유료-TV 액세스 제어 애플리케이션을 지닌 스마트 카드는 전형적으로, 특정한 서비스 자격을 승인하는 EMM들을 수신한다. 대체로, 서비스 또는 그룹 키는 동시에 전달되며, 만약 셋톱 박스가 IPPV 프로그램을 시청하도록 허용된다면, 크레딧(credit) 및 비용 한정 정보 역시 전송될 수도 있다.
프로그램에 튜닝할 때, 스마트 카드는 ECM들을 수신하는데, 상기 ECM들은 쇼(show)로의 액세스를 승인하기 위해 스마트 카드가 어떤 자격이 필요한 지를 설명한다. 필수적인 가입 요금을 지불하지 않고 프로그램을 시청하기 위하여 해커가 EMM들 및 ECM들 모두를 조작하려고 시도할 수도 있다. 일단 배치되면(fielded), 스마트 카드의 기능을 바꾸는 것은 힘이 든다. 스마트 카드로 새로운 코드를 다운로드하는 메커니즘은 프로그램을 훔치기 위해 스마트 카드로 해적(pirate) 코드를 로드하기 위하여 같은 메커니즘을 사용하고자 할수도 있는 해커에 의해 공격당하기 쉽다. 액세스 제어 시스템을 업그레이드하는 한 가지 "안전한" 방법은 상기 배치로부터 기존의 스마트 카드를 제거하고 새로운 스마트 카드를 제공하는 것이다. 그러나, 이는 비용 면에서, 그리고 기호논리학적으로 어려울 수 있다.

디지털 프로그램의 콘텐트는 스크램블 된 형태로 전송될 수도 있다. 조건부 액세스 유닛이, 상기 스크램블 된 콘텐트를 복구(recover)시키고 사람으로 하여금 콘텐트를 명확한 형태로 보게끔 해주기 위하여, 상기 조건부 액세스 유닛은 스크램블 된 콘텐트와 결합된 필수적 액세스 요건을 갖추어야 한다. 액세스 요건은 메시지를 포함하는데, 상기 메시지는 상기 스크램블 된 콘텐트를 디코딩하기 위하여 조건부 액세스 유닛이 갖추어야만 하는 특징을 설명해준다. 예를 들면, 특정의 키(key)가 상기 콘텐트를 보이게 하기 위해 필요할 수도 있다. 대안으로, 주어진 콘텐트 제공자와 관련된 서비스 태그가 요구될 수도 있다. 특별한 디스크램블링 방법과 같은 기술적 요건 또한 요구되어, 액세스 요건의 일부로서 포함될 수도 있다. 특별한 프로그램과 결합된 액세스 요건은 프로그램과 함께 조건부 액세스 유닛으로 전송될 수도 있다.
스크램블 된 프로그램이 조건부 액세스 유닛에 의해 수신되면, 프로그램에 대한 액세스 요건은 상기 조건부 액세스 유닛이 실제로 가지고 있는 자격과 비교된다. 조건부 액세스 유닛이 스크램블 된 콘텐트를 명확한 형태로 디스플레이 하도록 하기 위하여, 프로그램에 대한 액세스 요건은 조건부 액세스 유닛의 자격과 매치되어야 한다. 상기 자격은, 조건부 액세스 유닛에 주어진 서비스 제공자, 예를 들면, HBO로부터의 콘텐트를 보이게 하는 자격이 주어짐을 기술할 수도 있다. 상기 자격은 또한, 콘텐트를 디스크램블 하는데 필요한 하나 이상의 키를 포함할 수도 있다. 상기 자격은 또한, 조건부 액세스 유닛이 프로그램을 디스크램블 할 수 있는 시간 기간을 한정할 수도 있다. 따라서, 액세스 요건 및 자격은 액세스 제어 시스템의 일부를 형성하여, 디코더가 특별한 프로그램을 보도록 권한을 받았는 지의 여부를 결정한다.
액세스 요건 및 자격은 소비자에게 콘텐트에 대해 지불하고 스크램블 된 콘텐트로의 액세스를 얻는 다양한 선택을 제공할 수 있다. 이러한 선택은 재생 당 지불(PPP: pay per play), 시청 당 지불(PPV: pay per view), 시청 당 임펄스 지불(IPPV: impulse pay per view), 시간 기반 히스토리컬(historical), 시간 당 지불(PPT: pay per time), 절대 복사 금지의 영화 재구매, 개인적 스크램블링, 및 시청 당 영역적(regional) 지불을 포함할 수도 있다. 시청 당 임펄스 지불은, 셋톱 박스로 이전에 다운로드 된 크레딧을 통해 시청 당 지불 영화의 구매를 하도록 해주는 특징이다. 구매 기록은 계산서 청구(billing) 센터에 저장되거나 전화로 전송될 수 있다. 시간 기반 히스토리컬은 과거의 시간 기간 중에, 예를 들면 1997년 3월부터 12월 동안에 전달되었던 콘텐트로 액세스를 하도록 해준다. 액세스 요건 및 자격은 또한 스크램블 된 콘텐트를 저장하기 위한 서로 다른 옵션을 소비자에게 제공할 수 있다.
액세스 요건은 패킷 식별자(PIDs: packet identifiers)를 사용하여 조건부 액세스 유닛으로 전달될 수도 있다. 각 PID는 주어진 서비스나 특징과 결합된 액세스 요건을 포함할 수도 있다. 조건부 액세스 유닛에 전달된 콘텐트는 다수의 PID들도 포함할 수 있어서, 특별한 소득(revenue) 특징, 기술적 특징, 또는 다른 특별한 특징들이 국소적으로 수행이 가능하도록 한다.
콘텐트를 수신하기 전에, 고객에게는 미디어에 저장되려고 하는 콘텐트로의 액세스를 얻는 다수의 선택이 제공될 수도 있다. 고객은 콘텐트에 액세스하고 콘텐트를 시청할 권리를 구매하도록 요구받을 수도 있다. 그러므로, 만약 고객이 나중에 검색하고 시청하기 위해 콘텐트를 리코딩 하고자 한다면, 고객이 구매한 액세스 요건 역시 콘텐트와 같이 저장될 필요가 있다.
조건부 액세스 유닛을 위한 보안 체계(architectures)에는 1) 삽입된 보안; 2) 분할된(split) 보안; 및 3) 외부 보안이라는, 서로 다른 타입이 존재한다. 삽입된 보안으로는, 콘텐트 디스크램블링 및 키 관리가 예를 들면 셋톱 박스와 같은, 조건부 액세스 유닛 내에서 모두 이루어진다. 분할된 보안으로는, 디스크램블링이 셋톱 박스 내에서 이루어지나, 키 관리는 셋톱 박스 외부에서, 스마트 카드와 같은 암호(cryptographic) 프로세서를 사용하여 수행된다. 외부 보안으로는, 콘텐트 디스크램블링 및 키 관리 모두 외부적으로 수행되는데, 이를테면 NRSS-A와 NRSS-B 조건부 액세스 규격(specification)으로 이루어진다. 개방 케이블 처리(Open Cable process)를 통한 케이블 산업은 "포인트-오브-디플로이먼트"(POD: Point-of-Deployment)모듈이라고 하는 NRSS-B의 변경된 버전을 지닌다. 상기 POD 모듈은 NRSS-B와 같은 형태의 팩터(factor)를 지닌다. 그것은 대역 밖의(Out-of-Band) 채널 상에서 메시지를 송신 및 수신하는 기능을 포함한다. 상기 외부 보안 타입은 또한, 예를 들면 콘텐트를 디스크램블 하는 PCMCIA 형태 팩터 카드와, 상기 키 관리를 수행하는 스마트 카드를 사용하여 분할될 수도 있다.
덧붙여, CA 디스크램블 된 트랜스포트 스트림에 적용된 복사-보호가 있을 수 있다. 복사-보호된 콘텐트는 CA 모듈(NRSS-A, NRSS-B 또는 POD) 인터페이스 및 호스트(host)에 걸쳐 재스크램블될 것이다. 상기 CA 소자 및 호스트는 상기 콘텐트를 재암호화하는데 사용되는 키에 대해 동의할 필요가 있다. 일 실시예에서, 다양한 파라미터가 인터페이스의 각 사이드 상에 안전하게 공유되어, 같은 복사-보호 키가 각 측(party)에 의해 유도되는 결과를 낳는다. 도 2에서 보여진 바와 같이, 본 발명의 복사 관리 시스템을 구비한 디지털 수신기(111)의 일 실시예는 스마트 카드 인터페이스(420)를 포함한다. 비록 상기 스마트 카드 인터페이스(420)가 디지털 수신기(111) 안에 내장되어 있을 지라도, 디지털 수신기가, 상기 인터페이스(420)를 포함하는 카드나 디바이스를 수신하기 위한 확장 슬롯, 이를 테면 PCMCIA 슬롯이나 유니버살 서비스 버스(USB: UniversalServices Bus) 슬롯을 구비할 것으로 예상된다. 본 실시예의 디지털 수신기(111)는 CPU(430) 및 디스크램블러 집적 회로(440)를 포함한다.
스마트 카드 인터페이스(420)는 스크램블 된 프로그램 콘텐트를 디스크램블하기 위한, 암호화 된 제어 단어를 포함하는 스마트 카드를 수신한다. 스마트 카드(410)는 제어 단어를 암호화 된 형태로, 상기 스마트 카드 인터페이스(420)에 전송할 수 있다. 만약 콘텐트가, 키에 덧붙여 제어 단어를 사용해 처음부터(originally) 스크램블 되었다면, 스마트 카드(410)는 제어 단어를 암호화 하기 위해 유닛(401)에 고유한 암호 제어 키를 사용할 수도 있다. 조건부 액세스 유닛(401)은 상기 제어 단어를 해독하여, 프로그램 콘텐트를 디스크램블 하기 위해 명확한 제어 단어를 사용할 것이다.
따라서, 도 2는 분할된 보안 체계 및 외부 체계의 실시예를 도시한다. 분할된 보안 체계에서, 조건부 액세스 유닛(401)은 셋톱 박스이거나, 도 1에 도시된 디바이스(110)와 같은, 다른 타입의 디지털 디바이스이다. 외부 체계에서, 조건부 액세스 유닛(401)은 NRSS-B 조건부 액세스 유닛이다. 외부 암호 프로세서(410), 예를 들면 ISO 7816 스마트 카드는 프로그램을 디스크램블 하는데 필요한 제어 단어(CW들)를 수신한다. 스마트 카드(410)는 트랜스포트 디스크램블러 집적 회로(IC)(440)에 고유한 키로 암호화 블럭(414)에서 CW들을 암호화한다.
스마트 카드(410)는 인터페이스(420)를 통하여, 암호화 된 CW들을 셋톱 CPU(430)으로 전달한다. 셋톱 박스(401) 안의 트랜스포트 디스크램블러 IC(440)는 레지스터(450) 안에 저장된 고유의 디스크램블러 IC 키를 사용하여 CW들을 해독할것이다. 이어서, 해독 블럭(460)은 트랜스포트 디스크램블러 칩(440) 안에 위치한 디스크램블러(470)의 ODD 및 EVEN 키 레지스터에 선택적으로, 상기 해독된 CW들을 기록한다. 이어서, 디스크램블러(470)는 적당한 때에 스크램블 된 콘텐트(480)에 상기 ODD/EVEN CW들을 적용하여, 디스크램블 된 프로그램 콘텐트(490)를 출력한다.
따라서, 스마트 카드로부터 셋톱 박스로의 제어 단어 전달은, 상기 제어 단어가 암호화 된 형태로 전달되기 때문에 보안이 된다. 제어 단어는 셋톱 박스 안에서 안전하게 남아있는데, 그 이유는 제어 단어가 비 보안 프로세서(430)에 의해 해독되지 않기 때문이다. 제어 단어는 제어 단어를 실제로 사용하는 디스크램블러 IC(440) 안에서만 해독되며, 따라서, 제어 단어는 절대로 노출되지 않으며, 해커가 획득할 수 없다.
게다가, 제어 단어를 해독하는 데 사용된 키는 IC(440) 안의 레지스터(450) 안의 하드웨어에 저장된다. 레지스터(450)는 실리콘이 철저히 조사되고 레지스터가 파괴되지 않는 한 해킹될 수 없다. IC(440) 내의 레지스터(450)에 저장된 키를 철저하게 실험하는 시도가 이루어질 수도 있다. 그러나, 만약 키가 충분히 크다면, 공격의 수단은 희망이 없는 것으로 간주될 것이다. 게다가, 키는 오직 하나의 특별한 유닛(401)에 대해서만 유효할 수도 있으며, 제어 단어를 해독하기 위해 다른 유닛에 의해 사용되지 않을 수도 있는데, 그 이유는 제어 단어가 결합된 조건부 액세스 유닛(401)에 고유한 키를 사용하는 스마트 카드에 의해 암호화되기 때문이다. 따라서, 암호화 된 제어 단어를 스마트 카드(410)로부터 조건부 액세스 유닛(401)으로 전송하는 것은 보안되며, 제어 단어는 해커에 의한 절도에 취약하지 않는다.
보안 칩(440)은 제어 단어의 모든 보안 처리를 한다. 이 보안 칩은 CPU도, 펌웨어(firmware)도, 그리고 소프트웨어도 없다. 난해한 키 체계(hierarchy)가 존재하지 않는다. 비(non) CPU 기반 디스크램블러 칩은 암호화 된 제어 단어를 수신하며, 그것들에 고유의 키를 적용하고, 그것들을 해독한다. 지시도, 코드도, 해싱(hashing)도, 그리고 소프트웨어도 해독 블럭에 로드되지 않는다. 해독은 오직 단일의 키 기능을 사용하여 하드웨어 회로로써 전체적으로 수행된다.
고유의 키가 제작 중에 레지스터(450)로 프로그래밍 될 수도 있다. 예를 들면, 일 실시예에서, 디스크램블러 IC는 오직 한 번 기록될 수 있는 비-휘발성 고유의 키 레지스터(450)를 구비한다. 셋톱, TV, 또는 NRSS-B 모듈(401)이 제작될 때, 고유의 키 레지스터(450)가 프로그래밍 된다. 이 실시예서, 레지스터(450)로 로드 되었던 원래의 키를 판독하거나 덮어쓸 방법이 없다. 호스트(401)의 일련 번호와, 상기 호스트의 디스크램블러 IC로 로드 되었던 고유의 키 사이의 결합은 리코딩 될 수도 있다.
셋톱(401)이 제작되고, 스마트 카드(410)가 설치될 때, 스마트 카드(410)는 페어링(pairing) 할 때 유닛(401)과 결합된 고유의 키를 수신할 수 있다. 그 이후부터, 스마트 카드는 상기 특별한 호스트(401)에 "페어"된다. 나중에, 만약 스마트 카드(410)가 새로운 호스트로 대체되거나 이동된다면, 스마트 카드는 자격 관리 메시지(EMM)로, 디스크램블러 IC 고유의 키를 수신한다. 상기 스마트 카드로 이미 프로그래밍 된 상기 고유의 키를 지닌 새로운 스마트 카드 역시 사용자에게 전달될 수도 있다.
스마트 카드로부터 조건부 액세스 유닛으로 CW들을 전달하는 방법이 도 3에 도시되어 있다. 제어 단어는 단계(40)에서, 스마트 카드의 레지스터 회로에 저장된 키를 사용하여 스마트 카드에서 암호화된다. 스마트 카드의 레지스터 회로에 저장된 키는 디스크램블러 집적 회로의 레지스터 회로에 저장된 키와 결합된다. 암호화 된 제어 단어는 단계(41)에서 상기 스마트 카드로부터 수신된다. 이 방법은 디스크램블러 집적 회로에 프로그램 데이터를 포함하는 디지털 비트스트림을 수신하는 단계를 포함하며, 단계(42)에서, 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 프로그램 데이터는 시스템 정보 및 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트를 포함한다. 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어는 단계(44)에서, 디스크램블러 집적 회로의 레지스터 회로에 저장된 키를 사용하여 해독된다. 상기 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트는 단계(45)에서, 상기 해독된 제어 단어를 사용하여 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 디스크램블 되어, 디스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트는 단계(46)에서 출력된다.
암호 블럭(414) 및 해독 블럭(460)에 의해 수행된 암호 및 해독 기능의 실시예는 도 4, 5 및 6에 도시되어 있다. 이들 작동은 레지스터(412 및 450)에 저장된 고유의 키에 기초하여 CW들을 변형시킨다. 그러나, CW들의 암호 및 해독이 셋톱 박스에 국한되기 때문에, 점점 더 튼튼한 암호의 배치를 단계적으로 끌어들이는(phase in) 것이 가능하다. 예를 들면, 단일의 DES가 처음에 배치되다가, 나중에는 셋톱 및 스마트 카드의 이미 배치된(fielded) 페어링 된 유닛과는 별도로(with no consequence to), 두 개 또는 세 개의 DES가 단계적으로 끌어 들여진다. 상기 고유의 키의 키 길이는 적어도 디스크램블링 제어 단어만큼이나 클 수 있는데, 해커에 의한 상기 고유의 키에 대한 공격을 줄이는 것을 돕기 위함이다.
도 7에 도시된 대안의 실시예에서, 스마트 카드는 단일 또는 양방향 네트워크(720)의 헤드엔드(710)에 의해 대체될 수도 있다. 상기 헤드엔드는 국소 암호 마이크로제어기(local crypto microcontroller) 대신에 디코더(701)에 대한 액세스 권한을 유지한다. 헤드엔드(710)는 디스크램블러 IC(740)에 저장된 고유의 키에 기초하여 서비스 키를 전달할 수 있다. 암호화 된 서비스 키는 호스트(701)에 국소적으로 저장되어, 하나의 채널로부터 다른 채널로의 이행(transition)을 용이하게 한다. 키는 암호화 된 형태로 저장되며, 디스크램블러 IC(740)에 필요한 대로 로드된다. 키는 레지스터(750)에 저장된 디스크램블러 IC 고유의 키를 사용하여, 디스크램블러 IC(740)에서만 해독된다. 일 실시예에서, 서비스 키는 제어 단어로서 사용되어, 콘텐트를 직접 해독한다. 또 다른 실시예에서, 서비스 키는 제어 단어를 해독하는데 사용되는데, 이는 콘텐트와 같은 대역 내(in-band)에 수신된다.
서비스 키는 상술한 도 2, 4, 5 및 6의 실시예에서 제어 단어에 대해 사용된알고리즘 중 하나를 사용해 암호화되고 해독된다. 서비스 키를 암호화하고 해독하는데 사용된 알고리즘은 프로그램 콘텐트를 스크램블하고 디스크램블 하는데 사용된 알고리즘과는 서로 다르다. 예를 들어, M6은 스마트 카드나 헤드엔드 키 서버 중 어느 하나의 소프트웨어에서 하는 것이 더 쉬울 수도 있다. 또한, 각 서비스 키는 서로 다른 공공의(public) 및 사유의(proprietary) 암호 알고리즘을 사용해 암호화될 수도 있다. 이들 서로 다른 사유의 알고리즘들은 복제(clone) 하드웨어를 못 만들게 하기 위해 저작권 침해(any-piracy) 조치로서 간주될 수도 있다.
헤드엔드(710)는 EMM들에서 서비스 베이시스의 채널이나 층 상으로 서비스 키를 전달할 수 있다. 서비스 키는 디코더(401)에서 국소적으로 암호화 되어, 저장되며, 서로 다른 채널로 튜닝될 때 필요한 대로 비보안(insecure) 프로세서(730)에 의해 사용된다. 셋톱이 헤드엔드와 비교해서 높은 볼륨으로 필드 되기 때문에, 셋톱으로부터, 스마트 카드와 같은 암호 프로세서를 제거하면 네트워크에 유료-TV 시스템을 구현하는 비용을 크게 줄일 수 있다.
본 실시예가 한 방향(비IPPV) 방송 네트워크에서 작용하는 한편, 본 실시예는 특별한 서비스에 대한 키, 이를테면 IPPV나 VOD 구매 또는 이와 다른 임의의 비가입 서비스가 요청되는, 양방향의, 상호작용 네트워크에서 역시 수행된다. 리턴(return) 채널(721)은 키를 요청하는데, 그 이유는 새로운 서비스로의 액세스를 승인하는 능력은 국소 제어하는 암호-프로세서 대신에 헤드엔드(710)에 의해 수행되기 때문이다.
IPPV 프로그램의 동시(simultaneous) 임펄스 구입의 상당한 횟수로 인한, 헤드엔드에서의 오버로드(overload) 문제를 피하기 위해, 자유 시연(preview) 주기가 결정될 수 있으며, IPPV 프로그램은 실제로 시청하기에 앞서, 시장에 내놓을 수 있다. 이 실시예에서, 개개의 쇼 또는 영화에 대한 서비스 키는 유닛(701)에 의해 요청되어, 미리 앞서서(ahead of time) 전달될 수도 있다. 예를 들면, 상호 작용 네트워크, 이를테면 DOCSIS 모뎀이나 대역 밖(Out-of-Band) 송신기/수신기와 같은 비정규 경로를 구비한 케이블 시스템은 유닛(701)으로부터 헤드엔드(710)로 요청을 전달할 수 있다. 대안으로, 셋톱 유닛(701)은 액세스 된 각 프로그램에 대해 현재의 해독 서비스 키를 요청할 수도 있다.

상기 메모리와, 비보안의, 다목적용인, 호스트 프로세서의 처리력과 메모리를 사용하며, 별도의 암호 프로세서를 사용하지 않음으로써, 대단한 비용 절감이 얻어질 수 있다. 상기 암호화 프로세서가 제거될 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 상기 암호화 프로세서로의 통신을 취급하는 데 있어서 호스트 프로세서의 부분(part)에 더 적은 오버헤드(overhead)가 존재하기도 한다.
서비스 키는 프로그램의 지속 기간 동안 유효할 수도 있으며, 또한 한 주기의 시간, 예를 들면 6시간 동안 유효할 수도 있다. 더 긴 주기의 시간 동안에 대해 키를 사용함으로써 디코더(701)와 헤드엔드(710) 사이의 트랜잭션(transactions)의 전체 횟수를 줄여지는데, 그 이유는 일단 키가 디코더(701)에 저장되면, 디코더의 메모리로부터 디코더에서 이용 가능하기 때문이다. 현재의 서비스 키의 지속 기간에 따라, 다음의 키가 상기 현재의 키와 함께 전달될 수도 있다. 대안으로서, 디코더는 현재의 서비스 키의 유효 에포크(Epoch)의 종단(end)을 검출한 후에 다음 서비스 키를 요청할 수도 있다. 일 실시예에서, 서비스 키는 사용자의 가입 기간의 지속 기간 동안 유효하다.
서비스 키는 튜닝 중인 채널에 적용될 수 있도록 적절히 식별되어야만 한다.셋톱 박스(701)가 하나의 채널로 튜닝할 때, 상기 셋톱 박스는 메모리(735)로부터 적당한, 암호화 된 서비스 키를 조회하여, 그것을 디스크램블러 IC(740)의 홀/짝(Odd/Even) MPEG 키 레지스터에 기록한다. 도 2의 실시예에서와 같이, 비밀 고유의 키 정보는 디코더(701)가 제작될 때 IC(740)로 프로그래밍 될 수도 있다.

서비스는 정가표에 따라(a-la-carte) 또는 부케(bouquet)나 패키지로도 판매될 수 있다. 서비스에는 수 개의 층(tiers)이 존재할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 도 9에 도시된 바와 같이, 기본(basic) 층의 서비스, 더 많은 서비스를 제공하는 중간 층의 서비스, 및 서로 다른 최고급(premium)의 서비스를 제공하는 진보(advanced) 층이 존재할 수도 있다. 이 실시예에서, 서비스의 각 증분성 층에는 별도의 키가 주어질 수도 있다.
상기 표 1로부터, 만약 고객이 20 개의 서로 다른 타입의 서비스 층에 가입한다면, 이에는 ID 저장에 60 바이트, 현재 유효한 서비스 키에 320 바이트, 다음 에포크(또는 계산 청구 기간) 동안 유효한 서비스 키를 위한 저장에 320 바이트로, 총 700 바이트를 필요로 할 것이다.
통상, ECM들은 채널 또는 서비스 ID 정보 및 제어 단어(키) 정보와 함께 채널에 액세스하는데 필요한 액세스 조건을 전달할 필요가 있다. 이 실시예에서, ECM들은 단순화될 수 있다. 오직 채널 또는 서비스 ID 정보만이, 그리고 가능하다면 프로그램 ID는 만약 그것이 IPPV나 VOD 프로그램이라면, ECM 안에 포함될 필요가 있다. 이것은 메모리로부터 적당한, 암호화 된 키를 식별하여, 디스크램블러 IC의 적당한 레지스터에 기록하기 위해 그것을 사용하는 것 외에, 어떠한 ECM 처리도 수행될 필요가 없기 때문이다.

Claims (33)

  1. 디지털 콘텐트 디스크램블(descrambling) 방법으로서,
    디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트를 수신하는 단계와,
    상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 암호화 된 제어 단어를 수신하는 단계와,
    상기 디스크램블러(descrambler) 집적 회로에 저장된 키(key)를 사용하여 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어를 해독하는(decrypting) 단계와,
    상기 해독된 제어 단어를 사용하여 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 상기 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트를 디스크램블 하는 단계를
    포함하는, 디스크램블 방법.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 콘텐트는 텔레비전 전송에 포함된 콘텐트인, 디스크램블 방법.
  3. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 콘텐트는 인터넷으로부터 다운로드 된 콘텐트인, 디스크램블 방법.
  4. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제어 단어는 세 개의 DES를 사용하여 해독되는, 디스크램블 방법.
  5. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어는 스마트 카드(smart card)로부터 수신되는, 디스크램블 방법.
  6. 제 5 항에 있어서, 상기 스마트 카드의 레지스터(register) 회로에 저장된 키를 사용하여 상기 스마트 카드에서 상기 제어 단어를 암호화하는 단계를 더 포함하며,
    여기서, 상기 스마트 카드의 상기 레지스터 회로에 저장된 상기 키는 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로의 상기 레지스터 회로에 저장된 상기 키와 결합되는, 디스크램블 방법.
  7. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어는 네트워크에 의해 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에 연결된 제어 개체(controlling entity)로부터 수신되는, 디스크램블 방법.

  12. 디지털 콘텐트 디스크램블 장치로서,
    디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트를 수신하는 수단과,
    상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 암호화 된 제어 단어를 수신하는 수단과,
    상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에 저장된 키를 사용하여 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어를 해독하는 수단과,
    상기 해독된 제어 단어를 사용하여 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 상기 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트를 디스크램블 하는 수단을
    포함하는, 디스크램블 장치.
  13. 제 12 항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 콘텐트는 텔레비젼 전송에 포함된 콘텐트인, 디스크램블 장치.
  14. 제 12 항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 콘텐트는 인터넷으로부터 다운로드 된 콘텐트인, 디스크램블 장치.
  15. 제 12 항에 있어서, 상기 제어 단어는 세 개의 DES를 사용하여 해독되는, 디스크램블 장치.
  16. 제 12 항에 있어서, 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어는 스마트 카드로부터 수신되는, 디스크램블 장치.
  17. 제 16 항에 있어서, 상기 스마트 카드의 레지스터 회로에 저장된 키를 사용하여 상기 스마트 카드에서 상기 제어 단어를 암호화하는 단계를 더 포함하며,
    여기서, 상기 스마트 카드의 상기 레지스터 회로에 저장된 상기 키는 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로의 상기 레지스터 회로에 저장된 상기 키와 결합되는, 디스크램블 장치.

    상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에 저장된 키를 사용하여 상기 암호화 된 제어 단어를 해독하는 해독기와,
    상기 해독된 제어 단어를 사용하여 상기 디스크램블러 집적 회로에서 상기 스크램블 된 디지털 콘텐트를 디스크램블 하는 디스크램블러를
    포함하는, 디스크램블 장치.
  24. 제 23 항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 콘텐트는 텔레비젼 전송에 포함된 콘텐트인, 디스크램블 장치.
