Abstract
PURPOSE:To decrease the self-discharge of a battery with its activity retained by specifying the projecting thickness of an active layer on the surface of a positive electrode in a metal-bromine battery. CONSTITUTION:In a bromine electrode, a carbon plastic plate 52 is arranged within the opening 50a of a spacer 50, and a porous material 54 serving as an active layer is positioned on one side of the carbon plastic plate 52. As the porous material 54, porous carbon fiber cloth A or knitted cloth B is used. If a battery is allowed to stand for 5 hours after charged, in the battery using the porous carbon fiber cloth A, the peak coulomb efficiency is obtained when the projecting thickness of the active layer is about 0.10mm. In the battery using the knitted cloth B, the peak coulomb efficiency is obtained when the projecting thickness is about 0.05mm. The amount of self-discharge during standing is proportional to the bromine adsorbing amount on the active layer, and the low adsorbing amount results in the low self-discharge. The bromine adsorbing amount is little influenced by the type of the material and is proportional to the thickness of the active layer. If charge-discharge including standing is repeated, the peak of coulomb efficiency is obtained when the projecting thickness from the surface of the electrode of the active layer is about 0.1mm.
