Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain high performance both in low rate discharge and in high rate discharge by arranging a separator comprising three layer mats having a specified fiber diameter between positive and negative electrodes, and containing a specific material in part of an electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:Mats having a mean fiber diameter of 8mu or less are stacked on both sides of a fiber mat having a mean fiber diameter of 10mu or more to form a three layer structure separator. The separator is arranged between positive and negative electrodes, and SiO2 is contained in part of an electrolyte. By using the three layer structure separator, a fluidizable electrolyte is retained in the micropores of a plate and the fine fiber mat, and an unfluidizable electrolyte is retained in the thick fiber mat and spaces around the plates. The high performance similar to a retainer type sealed lead-acid battery in high rate discharge and that similar to a gelled sealed lead-acid battery in low rate discharge are obtained.
