Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate a positive and stable engine starting under cold weather with a substantial reduction of warming up time by employing a plasma igniter for engine starting only, in addition to a regular igniter. CONSTITUTION:When a switch 1 is switched on and terminal voltage V2 is brought up setting a flip-flop 13, a plasma ignition command signal VC becomes level 1, and a transistor Q is made on through a resistance R1 closing the contact of a relay 8, and voltage from a power source VB is supplied to a DC.DC transducer 9. As the result, high energy reserved in a capacitor 10 is infused into ignition plugs 7a-7d through a coil 11 and a diode 12a. High temperature, high pressure plasma gas is generated at the ignition plugs by means of which the engine is stably started and warmed up within a short period of time. A temperature sensor 14 monitors the cooling water temperature T, and when temperature exceeds about 60 deg., voltage VT also rises beyond a reference voltage VR of a comparator 15, and output VO therefrom becomes level 1 which resets the flip-flop 13 and stops the plasma ignition.
