Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound without degrading the activity of a catalyst, and suppressing the oxidative decomposition of the reaction solvent, by oxidizing an alkyl-substituted aromatic compound in liquid phase, in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a Co-Br catalyst or a Co-Mn-Br catalyst and a Zn compound.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic carboxylic acid is prepared by the liquid-phase oxidation of an alkyl-substituted aromatic compound with an O2-containing gas in a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid solvent, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a heavy metal compound and a Br compound, wherein said catalyst is composed of (a) a Co compound, a Zn compound and a Br compound, or (b) a Co compound, a Mn compound, a Zn compound and a Br compound. The atomic ratio of Zn/Co is 0.001W3, pref. 0.01W1.5, that of Br/Co is 0.1W10, pref. 0.5W5, and that of Mn/Co in (b) composition is pref. 0.01W5.
EFFECT: There is no substantial undesirable in fluences to the yield and the qualities of the resulting aromatic carboxylic acid.
