Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title high-quality compound with a low basic unit of acetic acid, by oxidizing p-xylene containing 0.5 wt.% or less of o-xylene in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst and a bromine compound in a solvent of acetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: P-Xylene is oxidized with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst, preferably a combination of a cobalt and a manganese compounds, and a bromine compound, e.g. NaBr, HBr, CoBr, etc. in acetic acid at 195W225°C and a pressure to maintain the liquid phase or above to give terephthalic acid. The gas is usually air undiluted or diluted with an inert gas. The o-xylene content in the p-xylene is preferably 0.3 wt.% or less.
