Claims (17)
1. A process for the preparation of 2 ,3-dicyano-l ,4-dithiaanthrahydroquinone which comprises reacting a salt of 1 ,2-dicyano-l.,2-dimercaptoethene with 2-chloronaphtho-quinone-(1,4).
2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the salt of 1 ,2-dicyano-l ,2-dimercaptoethene comprises the di-alkali metal salt or the diammonium salt.
3. A process as claimed in claim 2 wherein the di-alkali metal salt comprises the dipotassium or dilithium salt.
4. A process as claimed in claim 2 wherein the di-alkali metal salt comprises the disodium salt.
5. A process as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the reaction is effected in an aqueous suspension.
6. A process as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the reaction is effected in the presence of an acid.
7. A process as claimed in claim 6 wherein the acid comprises a carboxylic acid or a mineral acid.
8. A process as claimed in claim 7 wherein the carboxylic acid or mineral acid comprises formic, acetic, hydrochloric, sulfuric or phosphoric acid.
9. A process as claimed in any of claims 6 to 8 wherein approximately 1 equivalent of the acid is used per formula reaction.
10. A process as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the reaction is effected at a temperature of from 10° to 90°C.
11. A process as claimed in claim 10 wherein the reaction is effected at a temperature of from 30 to 60°C.
12. A process as claimed in any of the preceding claims which additionally comprises the step of dehydrogenating the 2 ,3-dicyano-l ,4-dithiaanthrahydroquinone obtained whereby 2 ,3-dicyano-l ,4-dithiaanthraquinone is obtained.
13. A process as claimed in claim 12 in which the dehydrogenation is effected by the use of chromic acid.
14. A process as claimed in claim 12 in which the 2,3-dicyano-1 ,4-dithiaanthrahydroquinone obtained is dehydrogenated by the use of iron(III) -bichromate in the presence of dilute sulfuric acid.
15. A process as claimed in claim 1 substantially as herein described.
16. A process for the preparation of 2 ,3-dicyano-l,4-dithia-anthrahydroquinone and -anthraquinone substantially as herein described in the Example. 43200/2
