A protective cover for fitting round a paper back book comprises a front part 18, Fig. 3, for covering the front of the book 10, a back part 20 for covering the back of the book, and a part 22 for covering the spine of the book and overlapping the front and back parts, the spine part being coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive 36 by which it is removably attached to the spine 40 of the book and front and back parts 18, 20, and the front and back parts each having a flap 24, 26, respectively, coated with pressuresensitive adhesive by which it is secured to the cover of the book 10. The protective cover is of thin flexible plastic material, and the front 18 and back 20 are reinforced by cardboard panels. Prior to the application of the cover, the adhesive flaps 24, 26 are protected by a thin plastic film. A slot 14 in the spine part 22 reveals the title of the book, and the spine 40 of the book 10 or the slot 14 may be covered by a sheet 46 of transparent plastic film. The protective cover shown in Fig. 4 is for application to a book 10 having no front cover, and with some loose pages. In this case, the front part 18 has two extension flaps 48, 50, the flap 48 being folded back over the front 18, and the flap 50 being gummed to the first page of the book. The open pocket 52 between the parts 18, 48 can receive any loose pages of the book. An opening 54 in the flap 48 allows matter written &c. on the panel 30 of the front 18 to be seen. The top edge of the book 10 can be protected from dust by means of a waterproof plastic sheet secured on the flap 48. A carrying handle for the protected book may be secured to the protective cover, by securing thereon a cord or cords by adhesive tapes, such that carrying loops are formed beyond the front edge of the book.
