992,789. Broaching; welding by pressure. P. ESSER, [trading as MEYER, ROTA & PASTOR]. April 30, 1964 [May 9, 1963], No. 18074/64. Headings B3L and B3R. Apparatus for trimming flash from welded rods comprises a cutter 22 having a cutting-edge embracing less than half of the rod and further cutters 39, 40 for completing a cut, the first cutter being movable only axially and the other cutters being movable outwardly as well as axially. The link 5 of a chain is supported on the saddle 7 of a welding machine and is operated on by upsetting tools 8 while being heated by electrodes. The cutter 22 is carried on a cylinder 16 advanced by fluid-pressure to effect a cut, after which the cutters 39, 40 are swung into operative positions against the cutter 22 by pistons 19, 20 and levers 35, 36 and the cylinder 16 is retracted to complete removal of the flash. The edges 23, 24 of the cutter 22 and the edges of the other cutters form Vees facing in opposite directions. The side cutters may be movable on slides instead of levers or may pivot about a common axis.
