Abstract

A chain-welding machine has means for trimming a welding ridge on the links comprising two cutting tools 25 set parallel to the plane of the link at a spacing adjustable to the diameter of the wire from which the link is made, the tools 25 being movable perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the link in the directions of their lengths to trim the welding ridge off along two parallel planes tangential to the periphery of the wire, and towards a fixed position saddle 6 upon which the link is held by two upsetting tools (8) (Fig. 3, not shown). The remaining welding ridge may be removed by a pair of semi-circular contoured cutters that move in the same or in opposite directions along the side of the link, or alternatively by press tools. The cutters 25 are mounted in an adjustable holder 22 which is itself mounted in an arm 21 that is pivotable by a cam to drive the cutters forward to trim off the weld ridge. The holder 22 includes a spring-biased feeler 28 that operates a switch 31 if a malformed or wrongly positioned link is engaged to stop the machine. Side play between the cutting tools 25 or between the feeler 28 and the arm 21 can also be used to operate a switch to stop the machine if a malformed or wrongly positioned link is on the saddle 6. The cutters 25 may be lowered before a fresh link is moved on to the saddle to act as guides for the link.
