Apparatus for preparing wooden elements for joining end to end by cutting out defective sections, cutting a required profile on the ends and spreading a layer of glue comprises two circular saws 9 mounted on a plate 5 connected with two actuating cylinders 4, a set of mould cutters 12 mounted on another plate 6 connected with another set of actuating cylinders, the actuating cylinders operating in pairs on common fixed piston rods 3 which act as guide rods for the plates so that on one rod there operates one cylinder of the plate 5 and one cylinder of the plate 6, and a tunnel 15 located between the plates along which is guided the element to be processed. The circular saws 9 are driven by respective motors 8 mounted on the plate 5 which is movable along the rods 3 by the lower actuating cylinders 4. The profile cutter 12 is connected at each of its ends by universal joints 11 to a pair of motors 10 mounted on the plate 6 which is movable along the rods 3 by the upper actuating cylinders 4. The elements to be processed are guided by a tunnel having a fixed part 14, a part 15 movable in guideways 17, and a rest 16 carried by the plate 6. In operation, the material is fed along the tunnel formed by parts 14, 15 and when a defect, which may be marked, is detected, for example by a photo cell, clamping cylinders 19 are actuated to hold the material. Simultaneously, plate 5 is raised so that the saws cut out the defect and is then retracted. A cylinder 18 then moves the tunnel part 15 a distance equal to half the pitch of the dovetail teeth formed on the profile cutter which is fed into the material by lowering of plate 6. A layer of glue may be spread on one end of the cut material during return motion of plate 6. In another embodiment, one of the circular saws and the part 15 are movable by an actuating cylinder in the direction of the feed of the material. In a further embodiment, the plate 5 is in two parts, each of which carries a circular saw and is separately movable.
