Abstract
992,614. Cleaning ships' tanks. F. A. HUGHES & CO. Ltd. April 29, 1964 [May 4, 1963], No. 18094/63. Heading A4F. Oil or like residue is removed from a tank compartment of a vessel by agitating a wash liquid containing an emulsifying agent in contact with the residue to disperse it into the liquid by forcing air through a pipeline having an opening near the bottom of the compartment, and then removing the dispersed residue from the compartment. The compartment is filled with sea water to a level about one foot above the orifices 9, 10 of pipelines 7, 8 and warmed by coils 6. Air heated by heater 13 is blown by a steam or electrically driven centrifugal blower 12 through pipeline 7 and orifice 9 to produce a foam in the compartment, an emulsifying agent from container 14 being drawn into the air stream by means of Venturi injector 19. After the residue has dispersed in the wash liquid, the emulsifying feed is stopped and foam depressant from container 18 is fed in to cause the foam generated in the compartment to collapse before the wash liquid containing the dispersed residue is removed via stripping line 8. The air flow is continued for some minutes to remove all undesirable vapours.
