Fire-extinguishing by foam.-A method of extinguishing fires consists in mixing a liquid con. taining foam-generating substances &c. with air as by means of an open water-jet air pump, an injector, or the like. A pipe b, Fig. 1, attached to a water main enters a closable tank a containing a solution of a foam generator. From the bottom of the tank a pipe c leads to a known jet air pump d, open to the air at e. An outlet branch f discharges the foam either by hose pipe &c. or direct, to the fire. In a modification. Fig. 2, a cylindrical receptacle h contains foam generator in powder form, soluble in a water stream from pipe i. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the jet pump d is directly connected with a water main by a pipe l and foam, e.g, saponin in form of a powder or concentrated solution, flows from a receptacle m with the suction jet, under pressure if necessary. In a still further modification, Fig. 4, a foam generator is conveyed from the receptacle, m to the suction jet in a stream of air through the pipe e. In all cases, suitable chemical substances may be added to the solution of foam generator or powder. Where an open receptacle m, Figs. 3 and 4 is used. continuous operation is possible. In the cases of Figs. 1 and 2, two receptacles a and h may be used in parallel. In all cases, the effect of the jet air pump may be increased by using a baffle or distributor at the outlet thereby reducing large foam bubbles. 'The foam may be led into a wide foam conveying tube an open gutter, or directly to the seat of the fire.
