Abstract

988,370. Moulding hollow articles. MONSANTO CO. Sept. 25, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960; Dec. 19, 1960], No. 34307/61. Heading B5A. Thermoplastics fabrics are moulded by heating the material to its softening range, stretching the fabric over a male or female mould and simultaneously bringing a thin flexible and extensible membrane of vulcanized rubber or silicone rubber down upon the fabric by air or fluid pressure or by vacuum attraction so that the fabric is forced into contact with the mould and assumes the surface configuration thereof upon cooling. The process may be plug assisted and a cutting instrument to the outline of the mould removes superfluous material. The fabric may comprise thermoplastics fibres alone, non-thermoplastics fibres impregnated with thermoplastics resins or upwards of 5% thermoplastics fibre blended with naturally occurring fibres such as cotton, linen &c. The fabric may be composed entirely or thermoplastics fibres containing 80% of acrylonitrile and 2 to 10% of an alkenyl substituted N- heterocyclic monomer, or 80% cotton with 20% of said acrylonitrile fibres. Alternatively, fibres of polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipamide or polyethylene may be employed. A cotton fabric may also be used wherein the fibres are coated with acrylonitrile. Blends, e.g. of acrylics and polyesters, may also be used and the process carried out as a batch or continuous process to produce toy teddy bears, horses, elephants, cars and hats, shoe tops, stool top covers, brassieres, woven furniture pieces, swimming suits and curved automobile upholstery.
