Abstract

A uranium based alloy contains: .Mo.0.1-0.75 atomic per cent, .Cr.0.1-0.45 atomic per cent, the remainder, apart from incidental impurities, being uranium The alloy may be heat treated by heating at 700-900 DEG C. followed by continuous cooling at 100-250 DEG C. per minute. If the heating is carried out in a salt bath, residual salt on the surface of the billet will prevent excessive oxidation while cooling in air. For alloys in the following range: .Mo.0.25-0.75 atomic per cent, .Cr.0.2 -0.45 atomic per cent, .U.balance apart from impurities, a preferred heat treatment is heating at 710-730 DEG C. for 15-30 minutes, direct transfer to a soaking bath at 540-560 DEG C. where it is held for 15-30 minutes. The alloys may be prepared using uranium metal and 3-6% master alloys with uranium for Mo and Cr. Specification 863,492 is referred to.
