Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formulae <FORM:0976215/C1/1> and <FORM:0976215/C1/2> wherein X is a halogen atom and Z is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy or an alkoxy radical containing less than seven carbon atoms. These compounds are obtained by treating 18,20-epoxy-20-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one or 18,20-epoxypregna-4, 20-dien-3-one with H2O2 to obtain 18, 20-epoxy pregn-4-en-3-one 20-hydroperoxide, treating said hydroperoxide with methanesulphonyl chloride to obtain 18-acetoxy-17a -chloroandrost-4-en-3-one, treating said chloro compound with lithium chloride, lithium bromide or lithium iodide to obtain respectively the 17a -and 17b -isomers of 18-acetoxy-17-chloro-, -bromo- or -iodo-androst-4-en-3-one. Reaction of the 17-chloro compound with silver fluoride gives the corresponding 17-fluoro compound. Hydrolysis of the 18-acetoxy-17-halo-androst-4-en-3-ones results in the corresponding 17-halo-18-hydroxy compounds which may be oxidized to obtain the corresponding oxo derivative e.g. 17a -halo-18-oxoandrost-4-en-3-one or 13b -carboxy-17a -halo-10b -methylgon-4-en-3-one. The 13b -carboxy-17a -halo compounds on treatment with alkali give the corresponding 13b -carboxy-17b -hydroxy lactone.
