Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula R1XR2, where X is S or SO, R1 is an alkyl or octyl radical and R2 is one of the radicals <FORM:0888669/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0888669/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0888669/IV (b)/3> <FORM:0888669/IV (b)/4> <FORM:0888669/IV (b)/5> <FORM:0888669/IV (b)/6> where Y is S or SO and represents the same radical as X in any particular compound. The compounds may be prepared by (1) reacting 4-vinyl-cyclohexane or 1,5-cyclo-octadiene with allyl or octyl mercaptan in the presence of ultra-violet or ionising rays to give sulphides; (2) reacting 4-vinyl-cyclohexene or 1,5-cyclooctadiene with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of ultra-violet or ionising rays and then reacting the mono- or di-adduct thus formed with allyl or octyl bromide in the presence of an alkali metal base to give sulphides; (3) reacting 4-cyclo-octene-1-thiol with allyl bromide in the presence of an alkali metal base to give allyl-5-cyclo-octenyl sulphide; and (4) reacting sulphides prepared by any of these methods with an oxidising agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, to give sulphoxides. Examples are given.
