Abstract

4-Hydroxy -3- keto -D 4- steroids of the androstane and 19-nor-androstane series are obtained by treating the appropriate 3-keto-D 4-steroid with diborane, oxidising the resulting 3b , 4a -dihydroxy-5a -steroid with N-bromoacetamide in an inert solvent to obtain a 3-keto-4a -hydroxy -5a - steroid, which is further oxidised with oxygen or air in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide in alcoholic solution to yield the corresponding 4-hydroxy -3- keto -D 4-steroid.
