A parallel knitting machine has means for transferring stitches which comprise a hook 1 which pivots about a pin 5, and a pin 40 located in a slot 30 of a bar 3. A pin 36 located in a slot 37 of a second bar 2 ensures that the hook does not move relatively to this second bar while the hook 1 is being rotated by the action of slot 39 on the pin 40 as the bar 3 is moved. Relative motion between the bars 2 and 3 produced by the action of cams on butts 43, 44 causes the insertion or withdrawal of a pin 42 in a slot 41 to move the hook 1. The movement of butts 43, 44 is controlled by the cam groups 6, 7, 8 (Fig. 3). The sideways movement of the transfer devices is produced by the action of cams 27, 28 (Fig. 15) on a butt 25 connected to a bar 23. Further butts 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, 24<SP>11</SP> located in inclined slots 49,49<SP>1</SP>,49<SP>11</SP> causing a sideways and downward or upward movement in relation to the cam movement (Fig. 17). The hook members are joined by a series of telescopic bars and pins 20, 21, 52 which allow the distance between the hooks 1 to vary as transfer takes place.
