Abstract
973,976. Seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 9, 1963 [Aug. 10, 1962], No. 30779/62. Heading F2B. [Also in Division H2] In a gas-cooled electric machine, e.g. a hydrogen cooled synchronous condenser, in which a main chamber 1 and a subsidiary chamber 2 containing the brush gear &c. are normally open to each other so that cooling gas passes freely between them, sealing means are provided comprising a rubber diaphragm 5 which is normally spaced from a seal member 14 but is movable into sealing contact therewith, as shown in chain-dotted lines, by high-pressure gas supplied through a pipe 12 to thereby isolate the chambers and facilitate inspection &c. of the brush gear. The diaphragm 5 is secured to a partition 3 having an aperture 6 through which the machine shaft (not shown) extends and the member 14 is formed on a fan hub 13 mounted on the machine shaft in the chamber 2. When the diaphragm 5 is operated by high pressure gas to seal against the member 14, the hydrogen pressure in the chamber 2 may be released and the chamber opened to atmosphere. The highpressure gas may then be cut off and the pipe 12 connected to the hydrogen pressure in the chamber 1, which pressure will then maintain the diaphragm in contact with the member 14.
