Abstract

805,980. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 3507/56. Class 122 (5). The shaft 1 of a gas-filled machine, e.g. a hydrogen-cooled alternator, is sealed by a seal ring 3 urged into facial contact with a relatively rotatable part by liquid pressure acting on the ring in opposition to the pressure of the gas in the machine. The ring 3 is axially slidable in its housing 4 but rotatably fixed by at least one pin 5 projecting from the housing into a slot 6 in the ring and is urged axially inwards into sealing contact with a shoulder 2 on the rotary shaft 1 by the pressure of oil in a chamber 7, which pressure may be assisted by springs 10 and acts on the ring in opposition to the pressure of gas in the interior of the alternator. Sealing rings 8 and 9 are provided between the ring 3 and its housing 4 and oil for cooling is supplied through ducts 12 to a circular groove 13 in the ring seal face from which pockets 14 extend radially inwards, the pockets being open to atmosphere through small orifices 18. The ring 3 may co-operate with a removable seat on the shoulder 2 or a collar on the shaft.
