831,170. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 33761/67. Class 122 (5). In a seal for the shaft of a gas-filled machine comprising a seal ring 3 slidable in a housing 1 and urged into facial sealing contact with a rotatable part such as a shoulder on the shaft, a port 2 is provided in the housing through which high pressure oil may be injected to act radially on the ring 3 to free the latter in the event of its sticking in its housing and thus not following up movement of the shaft in a direction away from the ring. The sticking condition is indicated by excessive flow of sealing oil which is supplied to the seal interface via chamber 4. Specification 805,980 is referred to.
