Abstract

888,198. Shaft seals. GOETZEWERKE F., GOETZE, A. G. June 15, 1959 [June 13, 1958], No. 20517/59. Class 122 (5). In a shaft seal 1 comprising a sealing lip 3 having a conical surface urged against the shaft 2 by a garter spring 4, the conical surface has ribs 5 which are of substantially semicircular cross-section, inclined at an angle of between 20 degrees and 45 degrees to a plane normal to the shaft axis and the distance between adjacent ribs at their bases is greater than their height. The ribs preferably have a height not exceeding 0.2 mm. and are inclined so that when the shaft rotates in its normal direction they create a back pressure opposing leakage. Oppositely-inclined ribs 20, 21 may be provided as shown in Fig. 3.
