Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula R1-N=CH-NR2R3 wherein R1 is a phenyl ring carrying in the 2 or 3 position a hydrogen, chlorine or fluorine atom or a methyl group, and R2 and R3 are each a methyl or ethyl group or R2R3 is a divalent hydrocarbon chain having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms and optionally containing one double bond, and acid addition salts thereof (N,N-dimethyl -N1- phenyl-formamidine and its hydrochloride and picrate and solutions thereof in common preparatory solvents are disclaimed); and their preparation by reacting a compound R1NH2 with a compound H.CO.NR2R3, or by reacting a compound R2R3NH2 with a compound HC(:NR1)(OR4) where R4 is a hydrocarbon group. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the above compounds with acceptable carriers and are prepared by admixture. Oral (tablets, granules, powders, capsules, cachets or suspensions, and in food) and parenteral (solutions, suspensions), administration (and as suppositories and pessaries) are mentioned. The compounds combat nematodes, for example in animals. According to the Provisional Specification, R2 and R3 may also be allyl or propargyl or, when a divalent chain, may contain an oxygen or sulphur atom; additional methods of preparation mentioned are the reaction of compounds R1NCO or R1NCS with HCONR2R3, and of R2R3NH with HC(:NR1)(NR4R5), and of R1NH2 with HC(:NR6)(NR2R3), where R4, R5 and R6 are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical.
