Abstract

962,543. Valves. ACROW (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Aug. 16, 1960 [Aug. 21, 1959], No. 28724/59. Heading F2V. An hydraulic pit prop of the kind wherein working fluid is forced past a charging valve in the head 14 of a ram 12 into a pressure chamber 26 between the ram head and a cylinder 10 to cause the ram to be extended out from the cylinder, is arranged so that the charging valve also constitutes a pressure release valve, comprising a main valve closure 20 which has a small bleed passage 30 through it closed by an auxiliary valve closure 32 of relatively small size, whereby the force required to unseat the main valve against the chamber pressure is substantially greater than that required to unseat the auxiliary valve, the valve members being opened to release the chamber pressure by an actuating member or push-rod 38, 39 which acts first on the auxiliary valve and then on the main valve to open them successively. The valves are spring-urged in the closing direction. A flatted pin 40 passing through the bleed passage is interposed between the pushrod and the auxiliary valve member. The main valve member has a side port 22 in a tubular part 20 and a head part 23 which engages a seat. Specification 962,544 is referred to.
