Abstract

640,414. Hydraulic jacks. MAVOR & COULSON, Ltd., and TOWLER, J. M. March 6, 1948, No. 7017. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group X] A hydraulic prop is extended by compressed air which forces liquid from the ram 2 into the cylinder 1 through a check valve 5 in the bottom of the ram 2. The compressed air control device comprises coaxial tubes 11, 12 fixed to the cylinder 1 and passing through a gland 4 in the bottom of the ram. The tubes 11, 12 carry a fixed piston 13 contained in a cylinder 14 adapted to move with the ram but having slight relative movement thereto. To extend the ram compressed air is admitted through a .control valve and passage 28, the tube 11, cylinder 14 and apertures 15 to the space above the liquid in the ram and the liquid is forced through the check valve 5. If the prop extends beyond its full stroke the cylinder 14 is held stationary by the fixed piston 13 and the ram moves away from it and uncovers a warning whistle 10. To contract the prop compressed air is admitted by a passage 29 and the pipe 12 to the space beneath the piston 13 and the cylinder 14 is forced down and first engages and opens a pilot valve 24 in the check valve 5 and then the latter valve by means of a lever 21 so as to allow liquid to return from the cylinder to the ram as the ram is depressed by, for instance, a mine roof. Final contraction is produced by compressed air in the lower part of the cylinder 14. A safety relief valve 6 is provided.
