Abstract

959, 949. Building-motion. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. June 15, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 21058/60. Heading D1D. A cam-actuated builder motion in a ring- spinning-frame comprises three levers, the first pivoted to oscillate in a vertical plane and having adjustable means for transmitting oscillatory motion therefrom in varying amplitude, the second attached to the adjustable means at right angles to the first lever and transmitting said varying oscillatory motion to a third lever connected to elements which lift the ring-rail. In Fig. 1, a first lever 10 is pivoted at 12 to be reciprocated by a cam 16. At each reciprocation, a pawl 28 pivoted at 29 to lever 10 and connected to a rod 32 with stops 34, 38 alternately engaging a fixed member, is oscillated intermittantly to rotate a ratchet-wheel 26 to rotate a threaded rod and move a nut 22 gradually towards the pivot 12. Nut 22 carries a second lever 24 which engages a third lever 42 connected by arms 44, 46 to a rotatably mounted shaft 48 connected by an arm 54 to a cable 60 secured to a quadrant 62. The latter is secured to a shaft 64 connected to a lifter-rod 72 through a bell-crank 84 and a foot and roller 74, 76. Thus, as lever 10 descends the ring-rail descends, and as lever 10 rises the ring-rail is lifted by a spring 88; during the oscillations of lever 10 the lever 24 gradually moves inwards pivot 12 so that the length of arc through which it reciprocates is gradually reduced, reducing in turn the extent of reciprocation of rod 72. By adjusting the position of arm 54 relatively to shaft 48, the shape of the cap can be varied. In other forms, the third lever is pivoted at one end, and directly connected to the cable 60 at the other; the lever has a flat top on which runs a roller connected to the second lever, and which has a switch operated when the roller completes its travel to switch-off the mechanism. In one such form, the pivot of the third lever is opposite the free-end of the first and the second lever travels towards the pivot of the first lever; in an other such form, the pivot of the third lever is disposed slightly forward of the pivot of the first and the second lever travels away from the pivot of the first lever.
