Abstract

1382995 Building motions JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd 25 Feb 1972 [10 March 1971] 6475/71 Heading D1D In a multihead flyer frame thread or tapes 5 are deposited from each rotating flyer 4 onto package supports 3 that are jointly vertically reciprocated by builder rail 1, the length of the reciprocated traverse being automatically progressively reduced during the building up of the packages and the rate of reduction of the traverse stroke being increased during the building period in which completed packages are doffed and fresh packages started. The rotation of heart-shaped cam 45 rooks traverse arm 42 about fulcrum 43 and hence, via link member 40, chains 38, 31, 24, 17, wheels 36, 34, 30; 26 and shafts 35, 28 and bar 20 reciprocates builder rail 1. At the end of each rock the traverse arm strikes trigger 73 or 74, thereby operating valve 71 or 72 to cause pneumatic cylinder 65 to rotate rocket wheel 62 via pawl 64. Wheel 62 is attached to lead screw 54 whose rotation causes link 40 to move towards the fulcrum 43 of traverse arm 42, thereby reducing the traverse of builder rail 1. The connection block constituted by 54, 55, 57 is supported by roller 76 on arcuate surface 77. When the block has moved far enough to the right to strike switch 80 a light warns the operator to turn valve 70 and to begin doffing. Valve 70 causes the pneumatic cylinder 65 to turn wheel 62 and hence screw 53 at four times the previous speed, so that the last few layers wound on supports awaiting doffing and the first few layers wound on newly inserted supports are tapered rapidly. When switch 95 is reached a further light warns the operator that doffing must be rapidly completed or the packages will foul the flyers. On completing the doffing the operator switches off valve 70 and manually resets lead screw 53 to bring nut 54 back to its full traverse position.
