SPINNING OR WINDING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IERBERT W. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Dover, county of Straiford, and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Spinning or lVinding Machines, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to spinning or winding machines, wherein yarn is wound upon the bobbins for subsequent use.
As well understood by those skilled in the art, where the yarn is to be subsequently used as filling, the bobbin is wound in conical layers, and both the base and tip portions of the wound mass present substantially similar conical forms. It is'desirable to increase the amount of yarn on filling wound bobbins by reason of the economy incident thereto, the less number of replenishments necessary in the loom during weaving, and other advantages readily appreciated by those familiar with the art. In the case of bobbins for use in some types of looms, known generally as filling replenishing looms, bunches of yarn have been preliminarily wound on the appropriate part of the bobbin to coact with mechanism on the loom, but the formation of such bunches has introduced special and complicated mechanism in addition to the usual builder motion which is, of course, objectionable.
In a prior application, Serial No. 661,798, filed November 22, 1911, there was shown, described, and broadly I claimed, means whereby an increased amount of yarn could be wound upon the bobbin while still maintaining the characteristics of the filling wind. The said means was broadly characterized by automatically causing the traverse of the builder motion to be shortened while winding the yarn at the base portion of the bobbin and then gradually lengthened as the yarn was wound in successive layers atthe portions of the bobbin above the base until the normal traverse of the builder motion was reached, which was then continued to the tip of the bobbin. vWhile the invention in said prior application was generi cally set forth and claimed, as above outlined, the particular embodiment of the inthe drawings of said application, involved the principle of the Specification of Letters Patent.

I have found, however, variation in the character of the bunch may be secured and a wider range of adjustments and advantages obtained b modifying the action of the movable pulley, and whilethe present invention aims to secure these further desirable conditions, it is yet subordinate to the broad invention as disclosed in said prior application.
The aims and purposes of the present invention will best be made clear by the following description and accompanying drawings of one form or embodiment of means for carrying it into practical effect, it being understood that said means may be varied within the true scope of the invention which is definitely pointed out by the claims.

In the drawings, the invention has been shown as applied to a ring spinning frame which may be of any usual or preferred character, wherein the spindle rail 1 sustained by suitable supporting means may have mounted thereon a series of spindle bearings 2 for-holding a series of spindles 8, on which the yarn is to'be wound. Obviously the spindlebea'rings may be of any desired character, and the spindles themselves, only one of which, however, is shown by the drawings, may be rotated by any suitable means. The ring-rail 41, which may be provided as usual with a series of rings 5 each having a traveler 6, is supported upon the usual lifter rods 7, only one of which is indicated, and these in turn are associated with suitable rockers or levers, 8 having a weight 9 whereby the ring-rail is elevated or Projecting from arm 10 having link 11 extendmovable pulley.

The parts so far described are or may be of any usual character and being well understood by those skilled in the art, need not be further described.
The rocker arm 10 is provided with the usual segment 12 to which is secured the support or yoke 13 by means of the connection 1 1. Said connection 14: may be of any suitable character but is preferably formed as a chain, and may be adjustable in length as by means of the thread portion 15 and adjusting nuts 16.
Mounted eccentrically at 17 in the support or yoke 13 is the movable member 18, pref erably provided with teeth 19. This movable member 18 may be variously formed, the essential in this respect, so far as the present invention is concerned, being that it may engage the connection to the builder motion at opposite sides of its fulcrum 17 and at varying distances therefrom, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The builder motion is best illustrated in Fig. 2, and may be of any usual or well understood type. As shown it comprises the builder arm 20 having a weight 21 and carr ing a roll 22 which is actuated by the traverse cam Pivoted at 24: to the builder arm 20 is the lever 25, the end of which is connected to the chain or other flexible member 27. The lever 25 is provided with a curved bearing surface 28 for the roll 29 carried by he slide 30, said slide having teeth 31 operatively engaged by the worm 32 on the shaft 33. The shaft 33 has the pick wheel 34: actuated by the pawl 35, the construction being such that as the traverse cam 23 gives uniform movement to the builder arm 20, the lever 25 will partake of said uniform movement but will transmit such movement in different paths, as usual. Since the particulars of the builder motion are well understood by those skilled in the art, further description thereof will be unnecessary.
The chain, or other connection 27 leading to the builder motion, passes upward, as indicated in Fig. 1, and over suitable guiding devices 36, beyond which it is joined by a swivel 37 to a flexible loop 38. This loop, as indicated by Fig. 1, embraces the eccentric member 18 and is preferably formed as a sprocket chain, the links of which are adapted to engage the teeth 19 of the cocentric member 18, and one run or member of said loop is elastic. As a convenient formation, the elastic portion of the loop is formed by a spring 39, one end of which is secured to the main portion of the loop, as at 10, while the other isconnected to the end of the chain portion of the loop at 4L1, the construction being such that, as the builder motion draws upon the rocker arm and perforce moves the eccentric member to the left, in Fig. 1, if the end portion 11 of the spring is restrained from such movement, the non-yielding portion of the loop will cause the eccentric member 18 to turn upon its eccentrically-arranged fulcrum and perforce impart to the rocker arm and consequently to the ring-rail a movement less than the full traverse of the builder motion, as will more fully appear. As one means to this end the elastic portion 39 of the loop is connected to an arrester or stop device, which acts during the formation of the bunch portion of the wind as the builder motion draws the rocker arm in the direction to lower the ring-rail. The particular means employed for this purpose may obviously be varied, but a good practical and convenient form thereof is shown in Fig. 1, wherein the elastic portion of the loop is joined to the machine frame by a connection 12. This connection is preferably made flexible and, as shown, is formed as a chain having one end attached to the elastic portion of the loop at 41, and the other end adjustably secured to a bracket 13 by a. threaded rod 4a and adjusting nuts 15, the length of said during the building of the bunch at the base portion of the bobbin, as the rocker arm is drawn to the left, Fig. 1, the connection 12 will arrest the movement of the lower run of the chain loop 38, whereupon the up per run of the chain loop will act to turn the eccentric member 18 simultaneously move it bodily to the left. Thus the eccentric member 18 is caused to act both as a movable pulley and as an cecentric or lever, imparting to the ring-rail a di'derential traverse movement partaking of the character of both. As the bunch is gradually built up, the builder motion draws the rocker arm less and less distance to the left, Fig. 1, so that the arrester or stop device 12, it ceases to act entirely and remains slack, whereupon the full traverse of the builder motion is imparted to the ring-rail which continues to the top of the bobbin.
It will be evident that before the machine is set in motion, the eccentric member 18 may be adjusted about its pivot or fulcrum 17 by disengaging the loop from the teeth thereof, and that by reason of its eccentric mounting the leverage on opposite sides of the pivot or fulcrum may be varied with consequent variation in the form or character of the bunch. Indeed, by proper forma tion of the eccentric member and its adjustment, as indicated, the bunch may be given an almost unlimited range of formation, as indicated by Fig. 3, wherein the bobbin a is shown by full and dotted lines as being provided with bunches Z) or c of widely different characters. These and any forms connection being such that.

In Fig. 4, a full bobbin wound by the invention described is shown, and it will be noted that while it is characterized by the lling or conical wound body and tip por-' tions (Z and 6 respectively, is full and rounded.
In Fig. 5 the eccentric member is shown somewhat modified in form, and as comprising an eccentrically mounted cam 46 mounted to turn upon its fulcrum 17 This and other modifications of the eccentric member will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art according to the character and form of the bunch desired to be placed upon the bobbin, all of which modifications, however, are clearly within the scope of the present invention as defined by the claims.
It will be noted in Fig. 1 that the arrester or part 42 passes through a slot 47 in the rocker arm 10, shown by dotted lines, so that the upper edge portion 48 thereof may act on the part 42 like a nose or foot as the rocker arm turns contra-clockwise, Fig. l, to thereby bend the part 42 downward and augment its action on the extensible portion of the loop and cause increased turning movement of the eccentricmember 18. This, however, while of importance in some cases, may not always be necessary.
