Abstract
An alkali or alkaline earth metal borohydride is prepared by reacting the aluminium hydride of the selected metal with a boric acid or metaboric acid ester of an alcohol ROH in an inert liquid medium containing sufficient of an ether solvent to dissolve the metal aluminium hydride. R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylene or halogen-substituted alkyl and a number of borates and metaborates are specified. Ethers may be diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, dibutyl ether or the dimethyl or diethyl ether of the diethylene glycols and they may be mixed with hydrocarbon solvents, e.g. benzene, hexane or cyclohexane. The reaction is effected at ambient temperature under an atmosphere of N2 with stirring and without cooling. Several methods of recovery of the borohydrides or etherates thereof are described. The method is exemplified in the preparation of LiBH4, NaBH4 and Ca(BH4)2.
