Abstract
In a process for preparing an alkali metal Al hydride by reacting the alkali metal or alkali metal hydride with Al and H2 under pressure at elevated temperatures in the presence of an inert organic liquid, the Al is ground, before or during reaction, with a hard, brittle additive selected from SiO2 (inc. quartz, sand, and glass); Al2O3 (e.g. corundum); ZrO2; Si; or a carbide of Si, B, Fe, Cr, W, or Mo. This additive may also contain a heavy metal oxide, e.g. Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, or Ni, (e.g. using natural sand containing Fe2O3), and may be used in 1 : 1 wt. ratio with Al. The organic liquid may be a solvent for the product, e.g. diglycol dimethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran; or a non-solvent, e.g. hexane, heptane, bentene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, tetralin or decalin. Pregrinding of the Al may be effected in the same liquid. H2 pressures of 10-350 atm. g. and temperatures of 50-200 DEG C. may be used for reaction. An oscillatory ball mill may be employed for grinding. NaAlH4 is exemplified and LiAlH4 referred to.
