Abstract
Alkali or alkaline earth metal borohydrides are prepared by reacting an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydrocarbon with a substituted diborane containing up to 4 hydrocarbon radicals, or a substituted borine BRR12 where, R is a hydrocarbon radical and R1 is hydrocarbon or H. Where the substituted borine contains no H, then H2 must be present for reaction. Reaction may be effected in inert organic liquid aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, or tertiary amines, e.g. hexane, benzene, perhydrocumene, tetrahydrofuran, or diglycol dimethyl-or triglycol trimethylethers. If reactants and products are insoluble in the liquid, reaction may be effected with simultaneous comminution, e.g. in a ball mill. Where ethers are used the borohydride is formed as an etherate, and with tertiary amines the reaction may be under pressure at above 160 DEG C. Reaction may be in inert gas, e.g. N2 or A, with heat, with, or without, distilling or filtering off the boron hydrocarbon also formed, and the substituted borine, or diborane, should be in excess. The boron trihydrocarbons formed may be hydrogenated to borines as in Specification 854,919. Colloidal B formed in the p reaction may be washed out with solvent. In examples:- (1) Mg(CH3)2 is reacted with B(C2H5)3 an H2; and (2) Li C6H5 is reacted with B(n-C4H9)3 and H2.
