Abstract
Sodium or potassium borohydrides are prepared by reacting boron trifluoride, or an etherate thereof, in solution with sodium or potassium hydride substantially in the molar ratio 1 : 4, in the presence of an amount of alkyl borate which is substantially equimolar with respect to the alkali metal hydride, and distilling the alkyl borate from the reaction mixture on completion of the reaction. The solution of sodium hydride and methyl borate in tetrahydrofurane is heated at 70-75 DEG C. The solution is cooled to room temperature and boron trifluoride as the etherate with tetrahydrofurane is added. After completion of the reaction the methyl borate is distilled off with the tetrahydrofurane at 80-100 DEG C. The sodium borohydride may be extracted from the fluoride by solvent, e.g. isopropylamine. The sodium borohydride may be reacted with aluminium or lithium chloride to prepare aluminium or lithium borohydrides.
