Abstract
951,618. Cleaning tanks. POLYCELL PRODUCTS Ltd., F. J. TREWENT & PROCTOR Ltd., A. TILBY, and H. A. STANBROUGH. May 5, 1961 [May 6, 1960], No. 16143/60. Heading A4F. [Also in Division F2] An oil tank is cleaned by treatment at atmospheric temperature with an emulsion in water of a solvent or solvents for the oil and one or more surface active or emulsifying agents which reduce the oil viscosity and render it capable of being emulsified in water. In the apparatus illustrated a ship's tank is cleaned by spraying through a rotary device or devices 3 an emulsion of salt or fresh water, a solvent, and a surface active agent drawn from a container 12 by a pump 2. The used emulsion is withdrawn from the tank by a pump 5 and returned to the container 12, and flows over a weir 9 to reach the outlet 13 leading to the pump 2 so that sludge is thus allowed to settle at one side of the weir 9 and is withdrawn periodically through an opening 16.
