Abstract

938,311. Handling radio-active material. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 7, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 39856/61. Class 39 (4). An apparatus for removing radio-active products from glove-boxes comprises a chamber 8 connected to a glove box 30 by a conduit 9, a can 1 within a lead casing 5 being positioned beneath the chamber by a trolley 4. The can contains a flexible bag 2 sealed thereto at 3 and is sealed to the chamber 8 by a flexible sleeve 7. The chamber 8 contains a lead piston 11 controlled by a crank 22 and a cable 23 connected to the piston by a supporting member 10 attached to the piston, the chamber 8 being sealed at its upper end by a bellows 24. The piston face has a cavity 25 covered by a diaphragm 13, this cavity being connected through a pipe 7 to an hydraulic device 16 whereby the cover 12 of the can 1 may be held by suction against the piston. Slidable safety fingers 21 lock the piston and cover in the upper position shown whilst the bag 2 is filled with the radioactive products through the conduit 9. After filling the bag, the fingers 21 are withdrawn and the piston is lowered by the crank 22 whereby the lower end of the chamber 8 is sealed by the piston 11 and the can 1 is sealed by the cover 12. The device 16 is operated to pass liquid into the chamber 25 and thereby release the cover from the piston and the sleeve 7 is necked and sealed and then cut off above the neck. A lead cap (not shown) is placed above the can and the trolley 4 removed.
