Abstract

1,029,361. Pipe couplings; pipe stoppers. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 30, 1963], No. 33517/64. Headings F2G and F2P. A fluid-tight closure device for a conduit 1 in a vacuum circuit comprises a removable closure cap 22, a closure stem 8 situated within a removable casing 4 fitting in a fluid-tight manner in the conduit and a mechanical drive for effecting movement of the closure stem. The casing 4, which may be connected by a pipe 5 to a vacuum pump, screws on to the conduit and is sealed by a toroidal ring 6. Screwed on to the casing is a nut 13 attached to the stem 8 by an abutment 14, thus acting to raise and lower the stem as the nut is screwed on to and off the casing. Screwed into the stem is a drive rod 18 operated by a control knob 19, having a screw-threaded spigot 24 receivable within a bore of the cap 22, in operation, the rod 18 is screwed into the cap 22 and the nut 13 is unscrewed to remove the cap, seals 25 and bellows 9 acting to maintain the vacuum. A reverse procedure inserts the plug which may be covered with a protective cap (Fig. 3, not shown) after the casing has been removed.
