Abstract

937,099. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1962 [Aug. 23, 1961], No. 31294/62. Class 122 (5). A seal for a rotary shaft 16 comprises a metal casing 10 housing an L-section elastomeric sealing ring 24 bonded to a metal plate 34 and having a sealing lip 28 shaped at 42 at an acute angle 44 relative to the seal axis. The ring 24 and plate 34 are held in the casing 10 by a retaining ring 26 and the sealing lip 28 is urged into contact with the shaft by a garter spring 30. A dust-excluding seal 50 comprising a radially slotted lip 54 is bonded to the outer end wall 22 of the casing 10.
