719,960. Stuffing-box substitutes. FORSHAW, R. DUTTON-. May. 6, 1953 [May 15, 1952], No. 12297/52. Class 122(5) A side-face seal comprises an L-sectioned metal casing formed by an outer circumferential wall 1 and a radial rear wall 2 and housing an annular sealing member 4 which is retained in. the casing by turning the free edge of the circumferential wall inwards as at 3, to overlie the sealing member, sealed to the circumferential wall 1 by an " 0 " ring 9 of rubber or like material located in a recess 8 in the member and compressed between the wall and the member, and urged away from the radial wall 2 by springs 10 so that the front face of the sealing member, which is provided with a graphite impregnated or like low-friction sealing surface 6, protrudes out of the casing. Relative rotation between the sealing member, which may be of rubber composition or a synthetic moulding, and the casing is prevented by a pin 12 secured to the wall 2 and slidable in a socket 13 in the sealing member. The casing may be covered on the outside with rubber or synthetic resin to fit the seal housing. The pin 12 and socket 13 may be replaced bv projections on the member 4 slidable in holes in the wall 2 or by fingers on the wall 2 slidable in corresponding recesses in the member 4.
