712,847. Oil seals. WRIGHT, H. CLAYTON-. Jan. 15, 1953 [Dec. 14, 1951], No. 29288/51. Class 122(5) In an oil seal of rubber of the type having a cylindrical rim portion 1 to engage a bore in a shaft housing and a flexible sealing lip 3 to contact the shaft, the rim 1 is reinforced by a metal ring 6 of the same width as the rim and incorporated therein so that the ring is surrounded by an annular layer of rubber. A garter spring 5 augments the pressure of the lip 3 on the shaft.
