Abstract
Surge-resisting electrical impedances (resistors) are connected between adjacent discharge electrodes of an electrostatic precipitator and the discharge electrodes themselves may be resistive where they extend in the direction of gas flow, or graded resistances may be included in the discharge electrode circuit where the discharge electrodes are perpendicular to the gas flow, in order to secure a progressive increase in the voltage gradient between the discharge electrodes and the collector electrodes from the intake end to the outlet end of the precipitator. The resistors may be mounted under compression between interlocking loops of conducting material so that in the event of burn-out a resistor would be short-circuited by the engagement of adjacent loops.
